ROGERS, MARIANNE WARWICK of Havelock, Ontario

Posted by on March 23, 2018

An ardent lover of life and long-time aficionado of northern rivers, Lenard Cohen, and fairly priced scotch, passed away on the early morning of March 21st. A woman who knew herself, in the Buddhist sense of the word, Marianne Warwick Rogers spent her mornings perched on a yoga mat, and her afternoons spreading love and happiness to all those so fortunate to have known her. As the daughter of the late Guy and Mary Rogers, mother to Anne Rogers-Degeer (Richard) and Michael Shearson, grandmother to Kristina, Diego, Jennifer, Christopher, Matthew, Sarah, and Laura, sister of Winnifred and Gay – her love and inspiration lives on in the memories and actions of those closest to her. Had you known Merry Marianne (a.k.a. Gummy), you would know that, on the morning of the 21st, the world lost one of the finest humans to have roamed the earth. Next time you’re feeling blue, look to the sky and think of Marianne, a feminist before feminism, a woman who carried her own packs and killed her own snakes. There will be a reception to celebrate her life at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King Street East, Cobourg, on Monday, March 26th from 1 to 4 pm. Those wishing may make a memorial donation to a charity of their choice. Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com.  She will be deeply missed but the love and understanding of Marianne will live on for generations. Happy travels Gummy!

WINTERS, Henry “Hank” Collins of Grand Bend, in his 77th year

Posted by on March 20, 2018

WINTERS: In sorrow, we acknowledge the passing of Henry “Hank” Collins Winters of Grand Bend, Ontario on Sunday, March 18, 2018 in his seventy-seventh year. Hank spent his last days in the company of his family and many friends, under the superb care of the Palliative Care Team at Bluewater Health in Sarnia, Ontario. Beloved husband, for fifty-three years, of Nancy (Edwardson) Winters, Hank is also survived by his children Elizabeth (David Matheson) and Philip (Gail Winters) and four grandchildren: Lauren Cummings Winters, William Matheson, Kaydence Matheson and William Henry Winters. Elder son of the late Eleanor (McRobie) Winters and the late Honourable Robert Henry Winters P.C. Brother of Marny (Marc Pearsall) of Toronto and the late Richard Winters.

Hank considered the world his home and steel his industry. But he was happiest as a child in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, where he loved the smell of the sea. In his retirement he was thrilled to discover something of that same delight in Grand Bend, with its legion of friends, volunteer opportunities, dazzling beach and three entirely new pursuits which he passionately embraced. He learned to sing barbershop with the Seaforth Harmony Kings; achieved a black belt in Karate at the age of seventy-five; and swam his way to a gold medal at the Ontario Masters championship. Even when his illness was most challenging, he always focused his attention on concerns outside himself, mostly to the benefit of his family.

A supremely thoughtful man, Hank hated to miss a meeting of the Red Bowl Society of philosophers. He was proud to catalogue his reading and his list reveals a selective and significant personal library. It was his final comfort to listen to his family reading to him the story of a round-the-world motorcycle adventure, one of his few unrealized ambitions. We now reluctantly release him to a grand new adventure, fueled by our gratitude and his own smiling enthusiasm.

On Sunday, April 8, 2018, the family will host a gathering of remembrance for Hank at Oakwood Resort, Grand Bend, at two o’clock p.m. A private family interment will be arranged in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia in the fall. If desired, memorial donations (payable by cheque) to Lakeshore Eco-Network would be appreciated by the family. Arrangements entrusted to the T. Harry Hoffman & Sons Funeral Home, Dashwood. Evelyn is survived by her daughter Mary (Kosta) and grandson Michael and her sister Edna and her brother David and nephew Jason Dow (Susan). Her siblings Eloise, Albert and Ken predeceased her.

Evelyn treasured the friendship of Lillian MacIntosh, Virginia and Jim Arnold, Alfie Schiestal, Blanche Ellenor Shirley Hick, Cathy Culleton, Irma and Nicole Seager. Verna Helps, and her son Steve and his wife Michelle and their children Ashley and Harley were a special joy to her heart.

Evelyn enjoyed travelling, reading, crosswords, and baking Christmas cookies. She missed Sarnia and the staff of St. Joseph’s Hospital. She loved nursing and fondly recalled her years working on the 4th floor north at St. Joseph’s.

Evelyn was a devoted grandmother to Michael, lavishing him with lots of love and devotion.

Special thanks to Drs. Kuszewski, One Care Medical Clinic, Sunnybrook Drs. Wong, Stroud and Vanner and Dr. Sisi Li. Their kindness and compassion was greatly appreciated. Also thanks to the staff at Scarborough General Hospital, ER, Acute Care and the Palliative Care Departments who made Evelyn comfortable in her long, hard battle with leukemia and lung cancer. Many thanks for all your help and compassion.
