It is with great sadness that we announce the falling asleep in the Lord of Walter on June 4,2012… in his 73rd year, following a 15 year medical struggle. Walter was born in Berlin in 1939. Dear brother to Bohdan “Bob” Tkachenko; brother-in-law to Dr. Michael Krawetz and sisters-in-law Gail Bently, Laurel Gillies and Lucy Tkachenko. Dearest Uncle to John and Evan Tkachenko (Betsy) and Great Uncle to Ella and Caleb Tkachenko. Uncle to Michael Krawetz (Sharon) and Great Uncle to Erin Krawetz and Great Great Uncle to Gage Krawetz. Uncle to predeceased Steven Krawetz Sr (Bonnie) and Great Uncle to Steven Krawetz Jr and Great Great Uncle to Dylan and Cole Krawetz. Uncle to Anna Krawetz (Jeff) & Ernest Krawetz (Nisan), and Great Uncle to Ashton and Reid Krawetz. Walter’s self-adopted family included Sophie Gawron and her daughter Dr. Nicole Gawron of Buffalo, NY, Lisa and Orest Tkaczuk and “grandfather” to their son Wasyl. Mark Seniuk and Thais Kostuk were also a significant part of his life. Predeceased by his parents Wasyl and Maria Tkachenko, and infant sister Oksana. Walter was a charismatic individual, who defied the odds of war and later, ill health time and time again all the while maintaining a positive outlook on life. In his professional life Walter was Director of Parks for the City of Toronto, formerly City of York. A devoted son to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, he served as an elder and was active on several parish councils as he was inherently proud of his faith and ancestral heritage. Walter was also active in civic & municipal affairs in the town of Milton, as well as being chairman of the policy committee for the Burlington Conservative Association. He also worked with the Literacy Counsel as a mentor. Special thanks to the medical staff at both St. Michael’s and Oakville Memorial Trafalgar-Hospital as well as Dr Helen Pyle. Friends will be received at the Ridley Funeral Home, 3080 Lakeshore Blvd. W. (between Islington and Kipling Aves., at 14th St., 416-259-3705) on Thursday from 7 – 9 p.m. and Friday from 3 -5 & 7 – 9 p.m. Panakhyda (Prayers) on Friday at 7:30 pm.
