Obituary of BURTON: Calvin of Puslinch, Ontario Formerly of Gander, Newfoundland & Labrador

Posted by on August 2, 2017

images-4

Calvin David Burton
May 31, 1938 – July 05, 2017

Calvin passed peacefully away at home in the arms of his lifetime love, soul mate, and wife amid the warmth and love of their family.

Calvin was born in Glovertown, Newfoundland, and found love within his family at day one; the same love he shared with all that knew him over the next seventy-nine years. His passion for woodworking, his unwavering optimism and love for nature were an inspiration to his family and many friends. If one was fortunate enough to meet Calvin, there was always a desire to see him again. His unique personality was a magnet and always attracted positive energy.

Survived by his loving wife, Queen, of over fifty years, his daughter and son in law, Penny and Darryl, and daughter, Tracy. He will be especially missed by his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Lucas, Nicole, Brandon, Olivia and Ashley. He will also be missed by his brothers and sisters; Joe, Vince, Bill, Mona and Rosemary and, in particular, his nephew, Jim.

Calvin was a well-accomplished professional electrician for forty years. He began his career in Glovertown; wiring homes in the 1960’s and then on to commercial wiring in Ontario in the 1990’s. Upon retirement, Calvin turned to his true passion, nature. For over a decade he passionately managed a family owned fishing lodge in rugged and beautiful Labrador. Guests that revisited Labrador year after year could not wait to be greeted by his contagious smile & colorful humorous stories. He was a champion storyteller. Somebody once said we should make at least one person smile every day, Calvin made everyone who met him smile. He was known for his unfailing courtesy and desire to help others create positive memories wherever he went. In the winter months, he could always be found whistling in his workshop, ready and excited to pass on his superb woodworking skills to his grandchildren at the drop of a hat.

Calvin was a doer of deeds and a dreamer of dreams. He often made things happen when others gave up. Life gives us all some special gifts…Calvin was one of ours.

A service in celebration of Calvin’s life will be held in Glovertown, NL later in August.

Obituary of KIPNIS: Pam of Kamloops, BC Formerly of St. John's, NL

Posted by on May 11, 2017

images-4

Pam Kipnis was born in Salford, Manchester, England on October 11th, 1924. She left this world on March 10th, 2017, at Kamloops, BC at the age of 92. During WWII, she worked as a secretary and never lost her sharp eye for grammar and blazing speed on a typewriter. Pam Linder met Norman Kipnis during WWII in London, England. They married in London and, like many war brides, she followed him to Montreal after the war, crossing the Atlantic by herself. Pam worked and supported Norman while he completed high school and earned an engineering degree from McGill University.
They had their first child, Evan (Michele) while living in Atikokan, Northern Ontario but, Pam was ever adventurous so they studied Spanish together and Norman took a job in Mexico. They crossed into Mexico in 1956 when Pam was 8 months pregnant with Wendy (Nick); two years later Kit (Dana) was her best Mother’s Day gift ever. During their time in Mexico, Pam mastered Mexican cuisine, grew all kinds of things in her gardens, learned to give injections in case of snake bite, how to milk a cow, pasteurize the milk and make homemade ice cream. She even taught French at a local college for a time.
In 1965, they returned to Canada, eventually settling in St. John’s, NL. In St. John’s, Pam worked outside the home at several occupations and made many good friends. She was a secretary in the Folklore Department at MUN, an office manager at Planned Parenthood, a typesetter for Breakwater Books, and lastly she founded and helped operate 3F (Fun and Fitness after Fifty) out of the St. John’s Aquarena for many happy years. Pam and Norman were also in on the creation of the Open Group theater company, with Pam bringing her make-up talents to a number of productions. All the while, Pam invested countless volunteer hours supporting her children in their studies, swimming (competitive and synchro), and water polo.
Pam was a lifelong athlete: track and field hockey in her youth; tennis, golf, curling, kayaking, windsurfing and swimming were amongst her athletic pursuits later in life. She also loved square dancing and became a teacher and accomplished caller.
An avid learner, Pam was always ready to embrace new technology. She kept in touch with her extensive circle of friends and family via e-mail. Pam found every opportunity to practice and keep up her Spanish.
In retirement, Pam and Norman followed their grandchildren (Aiden, Chloe & Timo) to live in Kamloops, BC. Shortly afterwards, more grandchildren arrived – Jonah & Bryn in Kelowna and Zev & Gabe in St. John’s, NL . She was an avid attendee at her grandchildren’s birthday parties and events. She loved long walks with the family dogs. Pam always, always put family first and loved to laugh with her extended family.
The grandchildren knew they could always count on Pam for sugary cereal, wagon wheels, hot chocolate, cheese slices, cheez whiz – and a sympathetic ear. She was a mum to her grandchildren when their mum was not home.
Pam carefully cultivated a bower of flowers on the upper balcony of their Kamloops townhouse and a jungle of tomato vines on the lower balcony, keeping the Kamloops family supplied with fresh tomatoes.
Pam was small, grey (later white) haired and – we joked – tough. She could always be counted upon; nobody loved so unconditionally. We will all miss our Pam, but we are grateful to have had her indomitable presence with us for so long.
Predeceased by her husband Norman, parents Sam and Charlotte Linder, step-father Herman Horowitz, brothers Lewis and Jack, and little sister Joan Wexler; Pam will be well remembered by her sister-in-law and dear friend Lola Ladin, nephew Sam Linder (Cindy), children and grandchildren and the extended Kipnis clan. Kit, Wendy, and Evan thank all the staff at Ridgeview Lodge in Kamloops for their excellent care of Pam during her last chapter and extend a heartfelt thank you to family and friends who all enriched Pam’s life.

Obituary of GILMORE: James of Wasaga Beach, formerly of Bala, Ontario

Posted by on March 26, 2017

James A. Gilmore (1926 – 2017) Obituary

James Andrew Gilmore (Jim), 90, of Muskoka, Ontario, passed away peacefully on February 23, 2017. A dedicated husband, brother, father, grandfather and friend – he will be sorely missed. His light shone bright and touched everyone he met (in many countries/across many religions). God willing, he will remain in all our hearts and minds forever.

Jim was born in Preston (now Waterloo) Ontario to Alfred and Lilian Gilmore on August 23, 1926. Growing up in Barrie, Jim was active in many sports with a passion for hockey, baseball and wrestling. Jim left high school at age 16, to take over the family Poultry Hatchery business in Barrie after his father died.

Married to Elinor Beatrice Mitchell on September 11, 1948, they moved to Aurora, in 1957 where Jim worked with Skyline Poultry Farms. A devout Christian and dedicated member of the United Church of Canada, Jim heard God’s call to work as a missionary and in 1962, Jim, Elinor, and children (Maureen, Barry and Jamie) sailed off to the mysterious, magical land of India.

Jim and Elinor served 26 years in Asia – 11 as missionaries in India, 7 with United Nations in remote Muzaffarabad (Pakistan) and 8 with UN in Delhi. Jim revolutionized the poultry industry in India and Pakistan, satisfying Hindus in India that unfertilized chicken eggs were vegetarian, establishing broiler rearing and distribution network in India and building hatchery/feed mills/broiler farms in remote Pakistan.

Jim was very active in the community – Rotary Club in Barrie (at age 23 the youngest president), Sunday School teacher, India International Center Volunteer, helping set up broiler/egg production in Bethany Village (a landmark rehabilitation establishment for lepers)– after retirement, Muskoka Lakes Ratepayers Association, Bannockburn Church Board (near cottage), Church choir.

Jim Gilmore is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Elinor; his three children Maureen (Moe) Donald, Barry and Jamie; his daughters in-law Ani and Sheilagh and son in-law Sandy; his 7 grandchildren Kerry Lee, Matthew, Sarah, Kenneth, Kathryn, Laura and Philip; his sister, Barbara; two nephews, Andrew and Jimmy and his cousin, Jean.

Jim’s Celebration of Life will be held at the family cottage in Muskoka, Ontario on July 29, 2017 at 2 pm. Please join us – contact one of his surviving children to confirm.

If you are moved to donate in Jim’s honour, make a small gift in his name to your church or to Bannockburn Community Church (1071 Bannockburn Road, Box 101 Bala) Wasaga Beach United Church (380 Zoo Park Rd., Wasaga Beach).
