ST AUBIN, DanielA man of strength and of peace, of duty and of joy, of courage and of kindness, has completed his life’s purpose to the full measure of devotion. He died in his 85th year, on Thursday, June 2, 2016 in Sudbury, Ontario, a community which he served with distinction for 50 years as a caring and gifted dentist. Throughout his life and at the moment of his death, he was comforted by his loving family, including his wife, Grace (Langlois), who was also his best friend.

He was blessed with six children with his first wife Anna-Mai (Sigouin), predeceased. He welcomed and embraced with love each of them, namely sons Grégoire (Pan), Benoît (Francine), and Roch (Denise), daughter Josette (Mark), son Jean (Jana), and daughter Danielle (Denis). His children were also his friends and he was always proud of them all. They loved and honoured him in return as did his ten grand-children, Mia, Martin (Amber), Matthieu, Magali, Caleb, Ani, Katherine, Sébastien, Sophie and Laurier, and a great grandson, Nixon. He is also mourned by his stepson Allan (Syndy) and children Colin and Neil, and stepson Rick and children Paul and Tara.

He was born in Windsor, Ontario in 1931. His father Alibert St-Aubin and mother Edna Mailloux, both predeceased, uprooted their small family in the depths of the Depression to safety in the small village of Ramore in Northern Ontario. As a young boy, Daniel grew up in a spirit of adventure and friendship, but also of service and duty rooted in faith. He was a great pal and guiding light to his brothers and sisters, namely Jérôme (predeceased), Rosalie, André, Françoise and Etienne.

Early on, he demonstrated special talents which led him to the field of health care. After moving to Sudbury where his father had been appointed a judge of the District Court, he attended the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Dentistry. Upon his graduation in 1955 with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery, he returned to Sudbury to open his dental practice. He pioneered paediatric dental anaesthesia in his community.

Along with his associates he founded the Sudbury Dental Group, an innovative 18 operatory room dental clinic in the heart of downtown Sudbury. He served his profession as President of the Sudbury Dental Association, but he most of was of service to thousands of patients with his conscientious and healing care. He was recognized for his life’s work when the Ontario Dental Association bestowed upon him its Award of Merit in 2001.

He was passionate about the outdoors and nature, and enjoyed snowmobiling and hunting, as well as spending time with his loved ones at Fairbanks and Agnew Lake, and trekking with great delight with his buddies to the “Où la Hache” hunting club.

He was proud of his Franco-Ontarian heritage and devoted himself to the good works of the Richelieu Club. Daniel was also gifted with a beautiful voice, and he took great joy in being part of La Chorale du Centenaire under the direction of Pascal Sabourin.

There was very little he could not accomplish with those massive hands of his, from very competent carpentry to remarkable works of art, with no task beneath him when it was of help to others. After his retirement in 2005, the sight of those hands gently caressing his beloved cats Coquette and Jerry was always heart-warming.

People trusted Daniel, as he was truly trustworthy. They enjoyed the sunshine of his smile and the warmth of his friendship. And they valued the guidance of his graceful wisdom.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Cooperative Funéraire de Sudbury, a community based funeral home which he served as President. Cremation has taken place. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no visitation. But a Mass will be lovingly celebrated on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 10.30 am at l’église Sainte Anne des Pins, the church he cherished and helped to restore as a treasured place of faith when it was destroyed by fire. His friends Father J.P. Jolicoeur to whom special thanks are addressed and Deacon Marcel Lefebvre, along with Father Lajeunesse, will officiate.

Internment will take place at the Sudbury Civic Cemetery after the Celebration, followed by a reception at the Sainte Anne des Pins reception hall. Donations to the St. Gabriel Villa in Chelmsford via the St Joseph Foundation of Sudbury would be greatly appreciated in lieu of flowers.

There will be tears, but these will not only be shed in sorrow. They will most certainly also be in profound gratitude for the gift of this loving man’s wonderful life among us.
