Peacefully at Fiddick’s Nursing Home on Friday, August 31, 2012 Ruth Myrtle Spiers passed away at the age of 92.  Ruth was born in Sarnia, Ontario, November 22, 1919 to Birdie and Alvin Tripp. The family home was at the southeast corner of Capel and Exmouth St.   She was one of ten, having six brothers and three sisters and is survived by only one sister; Edna Owls of St. Thomas.  Ruth married Bill Spiers and had two sons; Paul and Charles.  She was a golfer, curler, and an avid bowler.  Her team won many tournaments including a Michigan Championship.  She loved her home on Stag Island, in which her and Bill spent more than 22 years there.  The last eight winters with Bill, were spent in their home in Florida, another fun refuge!  Ruth loved to help people and took the initiative for countless projects.  A perfect example was starting and running a coffee social for all the people in her apartment building, so everyone had a chance to meet.  A lot of friendships came from this simple effort.  It was tough to be single and alone after being with someone for many years.  Ruth found a way to rectify that, it was a runaway success.  Her unspoken motto was work hard, play hard, she did both with equal verve.  Ruth is survived by her son Paul (Caroline) Spiers; eight grandchildren and countless great grandchildren.  Predeceased by her husband William Spiers and her son Charles “Chuck” Spiers.   Cremation has taken place.  A memorial service to celebrate Ruth’s life will be held on Friday, September 7, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at BLUEWATER BAPTIST CHURCH, 1256 Wellington Street, Sarnia.  The interment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery.  Sympathy may be expressed through donations to Fiddick’s Nursing Home and flowers to Bluewater Baptist Church.  Memories and condolences may be sent online at

The arrangements have been entrusted to Smith funeral Home, Sarnia.
