Joyce was born May 12, 1956 in Hampton, Ontario, the third of Hans and Anne Snoek’s eight children. She attended Knox Christian School and Durham Christian High School in Bowmanville, Ontario, then completed her undergraduate degree at Trinity Christian College in Illinois, during which she spent a semester studying abroad in the Netherlands. After finishing teacher’s college at the University of Toronto, she began her elementary teaching career at Brampton Christian School.

She met George during a trip to visit friends and family while still teaching in Brampton. She moved to the Cobourg area and began teaching at Northumberland Christian School in the fall of 1982; she and George were married on December 27, 1982. She took a break from teaching after her fourth child, but started back in as a supply teacher after her sixth was old enough for daycare, at least when she wasn’t busy driving the school bus to Durham. She continued teaching, transitioning into part-time and then full-time positions, ending up at Dr. Ross Tilley Public School in Bowmanville, where she initially taught Grade 7 before changing to Kindergarten.

Joyce was an active member of her church community, enjoyed playing on her soccer team, and loved to sing in the choir. She was an avid and vocal supporter at her children’s volleyball games. A very talkative woman, she always took a genuine interest in what was going on in the lives of others, even if they had just met in the grocery line, and was always ready with a kind word of encouragement or tidbit of helpful advice. Joyce loved spending time with her family more than anything, whether that involved relaxing in the living room, chasing children outside, impromptu visits at work, flying to the other side of the country, or leaving the country entirely.  She is survived by her father, sisters and brothers, her husband George, and their six children Timothy, Angela, Ryan, Jeremy, Joel, and Emily, and her four grand-children Connor, Annika, Eleanor, and Henry. Visitation will be held at Grace Christian Reformed Church, King Street East, Cobourg on Thursday, December 28 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.  Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 29 at 1 p.m. at Cobourg Alliance Church, Ontario Street North, Cobourg.  Reception following service at Grace Christian Reformed Church.  Those wishing may make memorial donations to John Snoek Memorial Fund.
