verne smoke 1SMOKE, Verne L., of St. Thomas, passed away at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Tuesday, October 1, 2013, in his 83rd year.  Beloved husband of Mary (nee Wilcox) Smoke. Dearly loved father of Cheryl Doyon (Phil) of R.R.#4, St. Thomas, Kathy Smoke of St. Thomas, Darrell Smoke (Colleen) of St. Thomas, Susan Robbins (Dave) of Aylmer, and the late Alison Portlock (Ed of St. Thomas).  Dear brother of Wilfred Smoke (late Amy) of Port Lambton.  Also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, a great great granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews.  Born in St. Thomas, ON, August 4, 1931, he was the son of the late Clarence and Vera (nee Wilson) Smoke.  Verne was a retired brakeman and conductor with the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway.  He was associated with First Yarmouth (Plains) Baptist Church.  Relatives and friends will be received by the family at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160) on Thursday, October 3rd from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. where the funeral service will be held on Friday, October 4th at 1:30 p.m.  Interment in Elmdale Memorial Park.  Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario gratefully acknowledged.
