SMITH, William “Bill” Lawrence – 85, of Woodstock, Ontario, passed away peacefully at VON Sakura House on August 10, 2013 after battling cancer for a year.  Bill spent most of his life in London, Ontario.  After retirement he moved to Sunset Cove on Lake Huron and then to Woodstock, Ontario. Bill was a successful photographer.  He spent his career working at the London Free Press in the Photography Department.  He could always capture the right moment with his pictures and words.  One of his passions was sailing, starting on small lakes and later on the Great Lakes. He was a great Captain; he knew the power of water and could read it well.  He enjoyed racing, and spending his holidays cruising Georgian Bay with his family.  Later in life he enjoyed Lawn Bowling, attending Airshows and fishing with his Grandson Stephen.  Bill was a loving, generous family man with a huge heart and great sense of humour. We will all miss his incredible hugs, and peaceful presence.  Dad referred to himself as the “DDS” (Dad’s Delivery Service). He was always there to encourage and help in any way you needed.  To lend a hand, listen to any size problem, or just give you a much needed big strong hug.   He was loved by everyone whose life he entered. Beloved wife, best friend and as he put it, his “Number 1”, Barbara of 60 years.  Proceeded in death by his parents Myrtle and Charles “Smitty”, brother Jerry and sister-in-law Patsy. Loving father of Michael (Karen) of Connecticut, Bill of Windsor, Patti of Woodstock, and Cathy Poole of Woodstock, whom he lovingly deemed his fourth child. We are blessed and honoured to call him Dad.  He will be truly missed by his Grandchildren, Jennifer and Michelle of Connecticut, Christopher of Windsor and Stephen of Woodstock.  He will be mourned by his brother Cal of London, sister-in-law Ann of Georgetown and extended Poole family brothers-in-law John (Betty), Rick (Eleanor), John Young, and Dorothy and Jaquie, all of Woodstock. He will also be missed by his nieces and nephews, and many friends.  His calming presence, laughter and love will be missed, but never forgotten.  As per Bill’s request there will not be a visitation.  A private Memorial Mass for the immediate family will be held at a later date.  Memorial donations in Bill’s name can be made to The Salvation Army or Holy Trinity Catholic Church and may be arranged through the SMITH-LeROY FUNERAL HOME, Woodstock, (519) 537-3611.
