Slingerland, Richard vigSLINGERLAND, Richard – Peacefully on May 2nd, 2014 at the Greater Niagara General Hospital at the age of 86. Cherished husband of Margaret Smith-Slingerland. Predeceased by his first wife Daisy (Andrews). Loving father of Gary (Kathie), June Pozzebon (Rick), Ken (Janice) and Jamie (Connie). Sadly missed by his devoted grandchildren Cindy (Jake Fast), Jeff (Elizabeth and her sons Josh & Kristopher), Matthew, Jordan and Aaron Pozzebon, Jena and Michael, Richard (Willow) and Rachel (Jared Goerz) and great grandchildren Sarah and Alex Fast. Predeceased by his eight brothers and sisters.

Born at Niagara-on-the-Lake Cottage Hospital on June 12, 1927. Farmed in NOTL for over 50 years on Four Mile Creek Road. He also worked at Mason Dairy, Silverwood’s Dairy, Brights Canning Co. and Ministry of Transportation. He served 25 years with the St. Davids Volunteer Fire Department and his family is United Empire Loyalists (1783). As a young man he served in the 44th Artillery Field Regiment Reserve. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and euchre player. His passion for music was unwavering. He played in a Slingerland Band, was a square dance caller and in later years volunteered his musical talents at Upper Canada Lodge.

Richard is at Morgan Funeral Home, 415 Regent Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake where his family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 6th and Wednesday, May 7th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A service to celebrate his life will be held at St. Davids-Queenston United Church on Thursday morning, May 8th at 11:00. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
