SHERMAN, Joan – Passed away peacefully on Friday, March 9, 2018 Joan Margaret Sherman of Woodstock. Predeceased by her beloved husband Keith and her parents Marion and Thomas Meloche and step-mother, Hazel Meloche. Dear mother of Lana Sherman and her husband Fred King of New Jersey. Loving Grandmother of fourteen year old Thomas. Sister-in-law of Myrna and Roger Smith of Owen Sound and aunt of Derek Smith (Mary) of Owen Sound, David Smith (Sara) of Toronto, and Michael Smith (Mary-Ann) of Cambridge. Known for dressing in her favorite color Purple, Joan was often referred to as the “Purple Lady.” She was fortunate to have found her life-long passion of figure skating at a young age. From elementary school she begged her mother for more skating lessons at the Owen Sound Arena. She traveled to Toronto and other Ontario destinations for training and testing. She proudly became a triple Gold Medalist in figures, free skating and dancing. She began teaching in the Owen Sound area at a young age and continued when she moved to Western Ontario, primarily in Hamilton, Cambridge, Brantford, Woodstock, Paris, and Burford. Skate Ontario awarded her the 50 year coaching pin in 2011. Her coaching included being a course conductor for seminars to skaters in Western Ontario. Her students of all levels from Tiny Tots to the Canadian Championships remember the passion, strength, and discipline that she instilled in her students on and off the ice.
