After a brief illness at Bluewater Health with her family by her side on Sunday, April 13, 2014, in her 92nd year. Beloved wife of Bill Schultz (2001) and Al Mason (2012). Survived by the Schultz children, Wayne (Judy), Warren (Clara), Lee (Diane) and the Mason children Carol, Ann, Paul and Richard. Survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and sister-in-law Ivy Schultz. Grace was predeceased by parents Wilfred and Myrtle McKinley, brother Earl, sister Ruth Greenslade, brother-in-law Lorne Schultz and daughter-in-law Sandy Schultz.
Originally from Caledon East, Ontario, Grace called Sarnia home in 1943 when as a young woman, she began her life’s work at the Sarnia YM-YWCA. Grace served the YMCA in almost every capacity, faithfully and enthusiastically for over 50 years. Grace’s accomplishments at the Y are too numerous to mention, except for the extraordinary time and commitment spent overseeing the YMCA’s Teen Town program. The “forever young” Grace made sure that two generations of teenagers had strong guidance and a place to call their own. Her boundless energy and commitment to others during her YMCA career was second-to-none and yet-to-be matched.
A born leader, Grace encouraged and set an example for others to follow. Grace never really retired but continued working tirelessly with many organizations in the community that included Sarnia Sports Hall of Fame, Goodwill Industries, UNICEF, IODE, Sarnia Lambton Seniors Association and Central Baptist Church.
Oftentimes, Grace could be found driving back to her home-town of Caledon East to visit her relatives and childhood friends. An avid hockey fan, she never missed a Sunday night game at the Point Edward area, oftentimes the only fan in the stands. Saturday was her “Leaf” night and she never wavered in her support of her hometown team. Grace lived life to the fullest and made every moment count.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of the ER, ICU and Palliative Care Units at Bluewater Health. Cremation has taken place. Family and friends will be received on Monday, April 21, 2014, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1576 London Line, Sarnia. A celebration of Grace’s life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Central Baptist Church, 391 London Rd., Sarnia. As an expression of sympathy, donations to the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, Goodwill Industries, or Central Baptist Church would be appreciated (cheques only at the funeral home please).
