A devoted father, grandfather and friend, a decorated Canadian war veteran, and a man who finished a career with Chrysler Corp. only to start another long career on and near the golf course, Pete passed away peacefully on Christmas Day, 2013, at age 92. Pete was cherished husband of Edythe (1995). Devoted father of Cheryl and her husband Mark D’hondt, Scottsdale Az., and  Peter and his wife, Julie, Denver, Colo. Proud grandfather of William, Denver, Colo. Brother of Ursula Benoit, Tecumseh, Ont. Predeceased by his parents and 11 siblings. Pete was dearest friend to Renda and Dave Pickford; and to Ken, Rick, Laura and all the members of The Fox Glen golfing community, where he cheerfully directed traffic from the starter’s shack and served as a good luck charm to all. He played a round of golf as recently as November, just one of many examples — from gardening, to hoping the Leafs might hold the Cup again before he passed, to watching his grandson in the surf — of Pete living life fully and happily up through the last minute. Pete gave distinguished service to the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps in World War II, serving honorably overseas for three years.  He was a dedicated Chrysler Corp. employee, Plant No. 3, for 35 years, before retiring in 1985.  He then began his second career, 29 years in all, at Fox Glen, combining his passions for golf with meeting new friends and greeting old ones. He took as much pleasure in finding a good swing for others as he did rediscovering his own best stroke.  That hole-in-one was a great day!  He was an enthusiastic gardener, producing bushels of tomatoes to share with friends. Pete gave blood as often as he gave tomatoes, honored frequently by Canadian Red Cross for gallons of lifesaving gifts.  Because he was an avid reader, and loved to share his passion for books with others, the family requests that in lieu of flowers any donations be made to “Raise A Reader” c/o the Windsor Star. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 1, from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.  A memorial service and celebration of Pete’s life will be held on Thursday, January 2, at 10:00 am at Families First, 3260 Dougall, South Windsor. 519-969-5841.
