FORTOWSKY: Gloria Rose of Valemount, BC

Posted by on October 10, 2015

images-4Gloria Rose Fortowsky (nee Fetter) was born on June 8, 1939 in Trail, BC and grew up on a farm close to Leroy, SK. She was a joyful person who loved gardening, singing, teaching, mountains, and people – particularly children and especially grandchildren and (very recently) great-grandchildren. She devoted her life to connecting with and caring for others as a teacher; a friend; a dedicated Catholic; an active community volunteer; and a loving wife, parent and grandparent. Gloria started teaching in 1958. After marrying in 1960, Gloria and her husband Arnold opened the first school in Southend, SK in 1960 and went on to spend much of their teaching careers working in small, often isolated, northern Canadian communities. After 45+ years of teaching, Gloria retired “for good” and she and Arnold moved to Valemount, BC where they had lived intermittently since 1990. In retirement, Gloria spent many hours gardening, keeping up with friends and family, and planning (and going on) travel adventures. Her generosity was well known; many, many people have plants that were given to them by Gloria, who regularly ended up with far too many as a result of her enthusiasm for planting.

Gloria is survived by her husband, Arnold; her children Keith (Mary Ann McGrath), Grace, Elaine, Shirley (Donald) Giroux, and Carolyn (Brock) Dagenais; her grandchildren Bridget, Sarah, Sydney, John, Rygel, Remi, Ain, Neven, Rozlyn, and Katica; her great-grandson, Felix; her siblings Sr. Bernadine Fetter, Gerry (Gill) Fetter, and Rodney (Ruth) Fetter; and her sister-in-law Diane Fetter. She is predeceased by her daughter Angela and her brother Gordon.

Gloria was much loved by her family and friends and is dearly missed since the automotive accident that took her life on September 28, 2015. Celebrations in memory of her took place on Monday, October 5 and Tuesday, October 6, 2015. She has been laid to rest in earshot of the playground and full view of the mountains in Valemount, BC.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Catholic Missions in Canada (https://donation.cmic.info/) or Chalice Canada (http://www.chalice.ca/donate) in Gloria’s honour.
