Potter, William Alexander (Al). Passed away peacefully at Hospice Simcoe on Monday March 3rd in his 85th year after a courageous battle with cancer. Fondly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Gwen (Dougherty). Proud father of Murray (Sherry), Carole Anne, David (Lisa), and the late Catherine. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren Sarah, Emily, AJ, and James. Al had a long and successful career in Human Resources, retiring from Radio Shack in 1982. An avid angler, Al could always turn a conversation to fishing, and to those who he encountered, he always had a (good) joke to share. Al spent his retiring years in the service of the Orillia Conservation Club, where he made many cherished friends, and was proud of the work he did improving streams, stocking lakes and rivers, and his very favorite event, the kids fishing days. He was incredibly active, fishing year round, taking care of his acre of property, and even traversed the 9 mile portage 4 times in his 80’s! Al was a tireless volunteer from his teenage years. He gave over 50 years of service to the United Way, earning a prestigious National Award for his years of service to the organization. Al was also a Team Fundraising Captain for both the RVH and Barrie Library Building Campaigns. The family would like to express their profound gratitude to Dr. Ng and the RVH Cancer Centre, The nurses at Bayshore Home Health, the Personal Support Workers at Red Cross, and Doctors Mossman and Belau for the wonderful and compassionate care provided during Al’s illness, and to all of the staff at Simcoe Hospice for their love and care for Al and the family during his short stay. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be a celebration of life in the near future. For those who wish, donations to Hospice Simcoe, RVH Regional Cancer Care Centre, or the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
