POOLEY: Donald Frederick of Vancouver and formerly of Montreal and Toronto

Pooley, Donald Frederick, January 12, 1924 – October 23, 2018. With great sadness, we announce the passing of Don, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Don was raised in Toronto and enlisted at the age of eighteen in the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he served during the last several years of World War II. During his service overseas, he met Kate, his British war bride, who served in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. Don and Kate began their married life in Toronto and eventually moved to Montreal, before finally settling in Vancouver, where they lived in Shaughnessy for nearly fifty years.

In his professional life, Don worked for more than half a century in the life insurance and financial planning businesses. As a recognized authority on the marketing of financial services and a pioneer in creating designations for chartered life underwriting, he shared his knowledge with audiences of financial consultants both nationally and internationally.

After Kate and Don raised their six children, they spent the early years of their retirement travelling the world–Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and various European cities.

Don was always very fond of his nine grandchildren, whom he and Kate entertained on a regular basis at The Legacy, their home during the last few years of Don’s life.

Don is predeceased by his son, Steve, and survived by his wife, Kate, and his children–John (Johanna), Anthony (Charmaine), Elizabeth (Paul), Sheila (James), and Mark. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Sharon, Mathew, Erin, David, Joey, Annie, Stefan, Emily, and Dana, and great-grandchildren, Declan, Kiana, Asha, Everett, and Isaac.

A private celebration of Don’s life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please toast Don’s memory with a very dry martini…with extra olives.
