LETTS, Audrey of Wiarton and formerly of Cochrane and Georgetown

Posted by on April 15, 2013

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

LETTS, Audrey of Wiarton, and formerly of Cochrane and Georgetown, Ontario passed away at Gateway Haven Nursing Home on Saturday, April 13, 2013 in her 89th year.  Cherished mother of Joseph Letts (Brenda) of Nashua, New Hampshire and Geoffrey Letts (Sandy) of Justin, Texas.  Beloved Grandmother of Briana Meikle, Christopher Letts (Christina) and Chantal Letts.  Audrey will be missed by her sisters Ruby Dick of Seba Beach, Alberta, Betty (Alex) Williams of St. John’s, Newfoundland, brother Barry (Pauline) Hynes and sister-in-law Rowena Hynes of Clarenville, Newfoundland as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.   She was predeceased by her husband Robert, parents Joseph and Dorothy (nee Walker) Hynes, brothers Harry and Ivan, brother-in-law Frank Dick and sister-in-law Genevieve Hynes.

Audrey’s life was one of service to her family, friends and in many cases strangers and the less fortunate.

During World War Two, Audrey proudly served as an Army nurse and she would be sure you knew she served as a Newfoundlander!.  After the war and along with her husband they owned and operated a nursing home for many years in Blenheim, Ontario.  Moving to Georgetown in 1959 she managed the Heather Nursing Home and subsequently was a floor nurse at Peel Manor in Brampton.  Upon retiring she returned to Newfoundland briefly before she and Bob returned to Guelph, Ontario as the property managers of The Willows.

Stories abound about her generosity, from personally paying back rent for families in her buildings to caring for the indigent in her nursing home.  A visiting priest once asked her why she would care for someone that couldn’t pay?  Her reply, “If I didn’t do it, who would?”  His reply was simply, “Your reward will be in Heaven Mrs. Letts.”

Today, she has claimed her eternal reward.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the management and staff of Gateway Haven Long Term Care for their care and compassion over the years.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Audrey will be held at a later date at Saint George’s Anglican Church in Georgetown. Interment will take place beside her husband Robert in Greenwood Cemetery, Georgetown.  Arrangements entrusted to the GEORGE FUNERAL HOME, Wiarton.  Donations made to Friends of Gateway Haven Nursing Home of Wiarton would be appreciated by the family as expressions of sympathy.  Condolences may be sent to the family through www.georgefuneralhome.com

Synopsis: Janice Margaret Featherston was born June 30, 1949 into a military family and spent her early years on her grandparents’ farm while her father served his country in Korea. Following his return from the war, the family led a typical military nomad life with postings in Petawawa, Winnipeg and Ottawa among others. She became the typical ‘Army Brat’ and maintained the ‘Brat’ part well beyond the early years.

Following her graduation from Woodroffe High in Ottawa (’68), Jan attended the University of Western Ontario where she was granted a Bachelor of Music, Honors in Music Education (’72) and a Diploma in Education, Post Baccalaureate Program, Althouse College (’73). Armed with her unstoppable desire to teach High School music, Jan responded to a note on the bulletin board at Althouse and soon became one of the founding faculty of what has become the world-renowned Music Industry Arts program at Fanshawe College. During her tenure, she touched the lives of the vast majority of the students that passed through the halls, many of whom have gone on to be some of the most creative and influential leaders of the international music industry.

Jan was principled woman who wasn’t afraid to stand up for what she believed and did so regularly with an amazing combination of tenacity and compassion. She was true leader whose greatest joy was watching others grow and flower, a real scrapper; who won every battle she took on, except one. The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Borrie and the team at the Aging Brain and Memory Clinic at Parkwood Hospital, Betsy Little and everyone at the Alzheimer Society London and Middlesex, and all the staffs at both Horizon Place Retirement Residence and McGarrell Place Long Term Care for all their compassionate and professional support throughout this ordeal.

A remembrance will be held at the Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London Ontario between 7:00 and 9:00 PM on Friday April 12. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer Society London & Middlesex www.alzheimerlondon.ca.
