Synopsis: Janice Margaret Featherston was born June 30, 1949 into a military family and spent her early years on her grandparents’ farm while her father served his country in Korea. Following his return from the war, the family led a typical military nomad life with postings in Petawawa, Winnipeg and Ottawa among others. She became the typical ‘Army Brat’ and maintained the ‘Brat’ part well beyond the early years.

Following her graduation from Woodroffe High in Ottawa (’68), Jan attended the University of Western Ontario where she was granted a Bachelor of Music, Honors in Music Education (’72) and a Diploma in Education, Post Baccalaureate Program, Althouse College (’73). Armed with her unstoppable desire to teach High School music, Jan responded to a note on the bulletin board at Althouse and soon became one of the founding faculty of what has become the world-renowned Music Industry Arts program at Fanshawe College. During her tenure, she touched the lives of the vast majority of the students that passed through the halls, many of whom have gone on to be some of the most creative and influential leaders of the international music industry.

Jan was principled woman who wasn’t afraid to stand up for what she believed and did so regularly with an amazing combination of tenacity and compassion. She was true leader whose greatest joy was watching others grow and flower, a real scrapper; who won every battle she took on, except one. The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Borrie and the team at the Aging Brain and Memory Clinic at Parkwood Hospital, Betsy Little and everyone at the Alzheimer Society London and Middlesex, and all the staffs at both Horizon Place Retirement Residence and McGarrell Place Long Term Care for all their compassionate and professional support throughout this ordeal.

COVERDALE: George of Burlington, Ontario

Posted by on February 22, 2013

August 23, 1932 – February 19, 2013

George passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 19, 2013.  Throughout each and every one of his 80 years it was evident that George loved his life, family and friends.  George was born on the family farm and lived there all his life.  A true man of the earth, he had a passionate love for farming and horses.  As a young man he worked for Aldershot Equipment as a hoisting engineer where he built many special relationships that lasted all of his years.  With a winning smile and knowing twinkle in his eye, George always proved to be a tower of strength to his family.  He displayed compassion, support and goodwill to friends, neighbours and acquaintances.  George was happiest in the saddle or in the seat of a tractor.  He was known to many as a great horseman and was always very humble regarding his accomplishments.  He was a lifetime member of the American Quarter Horse Association, a founding member of the quarter horse industry in Ontario, a Hall of Fame inductee with the Ontario Quarter Horse Association and a breeder and exporter of quality quarter horses.  George received many acknowledgements over the years including a police commendation and a humanitarian award.  But of all his accomplishments, the one he was most proud of was his family.  He was a much loved husband, adored father, cherished grandfather, beloved brother, admired uncle and steadfast friend.  George is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years Barbara; his children Debbie (Brian Rapson), John (Kim Boyle), and Robert (Tiina Suit); his grandchildren Tyler (deceased) (Trisha Rapson), Ashley, Erik, Kara-Lis, Kaylee & Madison; his great-grandchildren Wyatt & Walker.  He will also be terribly missed by his two sisters June & Anna, his many nieces and nephews, cousins and dear friends.  A special thanks to the staff of the Milton District Hospital for their caring and compassion.  As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Bethel Memorial Chapel and Cemetery would be appreciated.  c/o Betty Essig Village Gates 25 Hamilton St. S. Unit 2, Waterdown, Ontario L0R 2H4.   As was his desire, a private interment of George’s ashes will take place and there will be a celebration of his life in the spring when his beloved farm is green and in bloom.  Please sign the Book of Condolences at www.kitchingsteepeandludwig.com.
