MacDonald, Troy Jeffery – it is with the utmost of sadness we announce the tragic death of Troy Jeffery MacDonald, at home, on June 9, 2018, at the age of 21.  Troy is the amazing son of Jeff MacDonald and Linda MacDonald.  He is the best friend and cherished brother of Brad (Shawntel) MacDonald.  Loving grandson of Tony & Katherine (late Claudette) Kelly and Harold (late Jean) MacDonald.  Troy is loved by many caring aunts, uncles and cousins.  He is special to many, many friends, especially Devin & Brycen.  He is also fondly remembered by the Cuddy family. Troy was a very talented athlete and excelled at football.  Brad & Troy enjoyed fishing, boating, kayaking, bonfires, snorkeling, tubing and ATVing.  They would be all bruises when their dad joined in the paintball fun.  Troy’s smile was contagious and his sense of humor was enormous.  He proudly achieved his OSSGD last fall and was to start the Heavy Equipment Operator course at Fleming College in July.  His painful struggle has now ended.  May he be at peace until we meet again.  We love you dearest Troy and thank you for the joy you brought to our lives.

Obituary of HANLEY, V. CAROLINE of Cobourg, Ontario (formerly of Toronto)

Posted by on June 5, 2018

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Carol Hanley (née Whiteley) in her 80th year on May 26, 2018, after a brief but valiant battle with pancreatic cancer.

Virginia Caroline Hanley was born on September 3, 1938 in Fort William (Thunder Bay) Ontario, the eldest daughter of Thompson and Virginia (née Gundy) Whiteley. Carol honed her love of learning and sense of adventure and high jinks at Wapomeo Summer Camp, and as a boarder at Branksome Hall and Neuchatel Junior College in Switzerland.  Carol married her first love, Jim Hanley, in 1959. Together they raised three children, moving from Thunder Bay to Toronto in the mid 1960’s. Carol channelled her considerable creative energies into becoming a homemaker, consummate entertainer and master baker, and spearheaded many family travels and adventures along the way.

After 22 years of marriage, Carol and Jim divorced and Carol, with grit and purpose, embarked upon a new chapter as a career woman. She was an award-winning media sales executive before fulfilling her dream of becoming a successful television producer. She was most proud of her work helming the popular TV series, The Time of Your Life, hosted by veteran broadcaster, Jan Tennant, which aired around the world, Double Duty, Living with Grief and the long-running hit children’s show, Kidsworld.

Carol approached her retirement with the same unstinting vigor as she did her family and career. She moved from Toronto to the Cobourg area, where she volunteered widely, and was a recipient of the Cobourg Civic Award for Community Service in 2006. As volunteer President of Valley Voices, Carol worked tirelessly to preserve the pristine countryside of her beloved Shelter Valley. She loved the companionship of her wonderful dogs, and immersed herself in nature in all four seasons.

On a trip around Cape Horn, Carol met her second love and future husband, Harry Taylor. They spent 10 fabulous years together travelling the world, gardening, swimming and enjoying the company of their families and large circle of friends in Mexico and Cobourg.

Carol is predeceased by her husband, Harry Taylor,  her sister Anne (Glenn) Burns, brother-in-law, Murray Wiltse and, tragically, her 18 year-old grandson Lucas Martin. Carol leaves her loving family, Jim Hanley, sister Joyce Wiltse, brothers Gordon (Julie) and John (Jan) Whitely, her children Kate (Peter), Tom and Susan (Craig) Hanley and beloved grandchildren, Jackson Martin and Ellery Aziz. She will be sadly missed by her loving cousins, nieces, nephews and their families, as well as her many cherished friends in Canada, Mexico and abroad.

Carol created a life overflowing with adventure and joy, touching everyone around her.  Her shining spirit and sense of humour could light up the room, even in her final days. While she will be sorely missed, we believe that her courage and relentless energy will live on forever.

Special thanks to Michelle Tongnawa and the PSW team at Mavencare for their compassionate care during Carol’s final weeks.

In lieu of flowers, Carol has requested contributions in remembrance of her grandson, Lucas Martin, to the Sarcoma Medical Oncology Research Fund, thepmcf.ca.

A celebration of Carol’s life will take place at The Cobourg Creek Golf Course and Mill Restaurant, 990 Ontario Street, Cobourg, at 2 pm on Tuesday, June 12. For further details please consult the MacCoubrey Funeral Home, www.MacCoubrey.com.

Obituary of METSON, John Murray of Cobourg, Ontario

Posted by on May 24, 2018

22 March 1933 – 19 May 2018

The unstoppable John came to a mountain that he could not scale, when he lost his battle with a rare and fierce form of leukemia. He died while being comforted in the embrace of his beloved sons, daughter-in-law and wife. John left us poorer for his absence but richer for the experience of his presence in our lives.

Born in Brandon, Manitoba, as the second youngest of a brood of six: George, Mina, Walter, Hazel and Peggy, John was strengthened by facing adversity early in life. Having contracted polio at age five, he eventually regained good health with a rehabilitation that included his ailing father pushing  him as he skated while holding on to the back of chair. A graduate of Mt. Allison University (BA Theology), and Queen’s (MA Theology and Psychology) he was acknowledged later in his career with an Honorary PhD in Theology from Queen’s University.  As a young United Church minister in Oyen, Alberta, he conducted four services every Sunday in small prairie towns.  John loved that life but moved to Toronto in 1964 establishing, in Cabbagetown, the first, non-congregational, community outreach  Ministry in the United Church; The Christian Resource Centre (CRC) .  It was groundbreaking and continues to provide social policy advocacy, dignified self-help housing, and support for members of an often-disenfranchised community. He was an excellent team player and builder who worked with many like-minded people to improve the social conditions in downtown Toronto.  His community development model has been replicated across Canada because it works well and enables program recipients to maintain their wellbeing and dignity.

Along the way, John was Chaplain of Victoria University, University of Toronto, which meant he was able to support and counsel students and faculty. This led to administering many weddings during the summer; thus making his wife a ‘Professional Wedding Guest’. A kind and generous man, he served on several boards of directors including: The national board of the Canadian Housing Renewal Association (CHRA); Habitat for Humanity; As president of Ontario Non-Profit Housing Association (ONPHA); As president of Metro Toronto Housing Corporation (MTHC), while providing development leadership to the United Church and stabilizing funding for Outreach.

He was 85 years of age when he died. John commuted by train to his office in downtown Toronto until recently. Because he loved his work, he never considered retirement. John’s successful work life was balanced by a wide range of interests. He was proficient in several sporting activities, while also enjoying travel, culinary and cultural experiences, and carefully observing politics at every level. He cherished family life and enjoyed sharing experiences with friends in the city and the country. John had a remarkable ability to communicate comfortably with people of all ages and circumstances.

His only profound regret was leaving his beloveds: wife Gayle, children Michael (Radana), Megan Louise, Alex (Laura) and stepson Jay; grandchildren Patrick (Gosia), Laura, Bradley Harman, Emily and Joshua Metson, William and Julianna Metson, and Joshua Perks, his sisters and brother-in-law and his nieces and nephews.  He loved us all so deeply, as we did him.

A remarkable man, he left his grace upon all who were fortunate enough to know him. John’s family members extend their appreciation and gratitude to the many health professionals and caregivers who cared for and sustained him through health challenges in the weeks preceding his death.

Celebration of Life service is on Thursday, May 31 at 11:00 am at Trinity United Church, 284 Division St. Cobourg, reception to follow in the church hall. There will be a public Memorial in Toronto in September, with the date and location to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to: Toronto CRC, 40 Oak Street, Toronto M5A 2C6 and/or Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation, 1000 DePalma Drive, Cobourg K9A 5W6. Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com.

Peacefully at the Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg on Monday, May 14, 2018, Paul Armstrong at 71 years of age.  Beloved husband of Jane (nee Murray) for 37 years, and loving “Dad” to his little rescue dog Josie.  Only child of the late Murray and Helen Armstrong.  Paul was extremely proud of his 36 year career with Imperial Oil, retiring in 2005.  Always dapper in his appearance, a stroke 10 years ago did not diminish Paul’s sense of humour or love for life and he and Jane enjoyed their summers at Rice Lake and winters in Naples, Florida while spending many “Happy Hours” with their numerous and cherished friends, who became their family.  A special thank you to the nurses and staff at NHH Restorative Unit for their unwavering and compassionate care over the past few months.  Cremation with a Celebration of Life Service at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. E. in Cobourg on Saturday, June 16 at 1 pm followed by a gathering in the funeral home reception centre until 4 pm.  Those wishing may make a memorial donation to the Salvation Army, Cobourg.  Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com.
