Obituary of SCHERMERHORN, Duane of Cobourg and formerly of Toronto

Posted by on October 3, 2018

It is with deep sadness that the family of Duane Schermerhorn announces his sudden death from a ruptured aortic aneurysm, in Toronto, on Friday September 28, 2018. Cherished husband of Patricia Stanley, Duane was predeceased by his only sibling and best friend Diane White, and his parents Mary and Arthur.

Born in Portland, Oregon, Duane was a graduate cum laude of Harvard College. He moved to Montreal in 1969, married his first wife Shirleen Ekroth, and began his career in Information Technology at Sun Life. In 1980 he moved to Toronto to be with and subsequently marry the love of his life, Patricia Stanley. After a decade of writing poetry and having four novels published, he resumed his career in Information technology at Sun Life, where he reached the level of Assistant Vice President. He then joined the Bank of Montreal until his retirement in 2003. Duane and Pat moved to Cobourg in 2002, where he began a successful website design and development business, from which he retired in 2015.

Duane loved animals (Bandit will miss him terribly), and was passionate about art and photography. He was concerned with the environment and the state of the world. Duane was a kind, gentle and generous man, with a great sense of humour, an amazing intellect, and a strong moral code. He loved to encourage people to talk to him about their passions, and was the best listener one could ever imagine.

Duane was on the boards of the Arts Council of Northumberland and the Art Gallery of Northumberland at various points during his time in Cobourg, and received the Town of Cobourg Civic Award for the Arts in 2011. He was recently appointed to the Cobourg Cultural Master Plan Steering Committee. Over the past 4 years Duane has been dedicating much of his time, energy and creativity to helping the Art Gallery of Northumberland achieve a strong, viable institution. He was also expanding his photography skills, and learning how to look at, understand and appreciate art in all its forms. He was volunteering, as usual, at the Gallery on the day of his death.

Duane will be missed terribly by Pat, Bandit, and all of his family, friends and working partners. He is irreplaceable in this world.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Art Gallery of Northumberland would be appreciated. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Art Gallery of Northumberland, Victoria Hall, 55 King Street West, Cobourg, on October 21st,  from 1 – 3 p.m. More information will be available at the Gallery. Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com.

With heavy hearts and great sorrow, we are saddened to announce the passing of a great man on Monday, September 24, 2018 at the Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg.  Milf or “Ma Reid” (as he was affectionately called by many) will be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege of meeting him.  Milf was the son of Louis Reid and Mary Winstanley (Deceased) and was a self-taught, well read and travelled man.  He went to work at GM on the “Boys Line” when he was 15 and stayed for 32 years in various capacities.  This country boy always wanted to go north. He was a handyman extraordinaire. You could always go to Milf and he would tell you or teach you how to do it.

Obituary of NORCUTT, David Hubert “Graham” of Castleton, Ontario

Posted by on September 21, 2018

Graham passed quietly at Northumberland Hills Hospital on September 6, 2018, in his 79th year.  He was predeceased by his parents, David Norcutt and Catherine Norcutt (nee Palmer), and his beloved wife, Carol (nee Black).  Graham leaves one son, William Edward Norcutt, and a wide circle of friends, to mourn his passing.

Graham had a rich life and lived it ever as a gentleman.  He was born in the Philippines, where his father was an RAF pilot during WWII.  He and his mother fled the Japanese to Australia, where they ended up on an isolated sheep station.  As a boy he took his schooling over the radio and began a life long love affair with books.  He won a scholarship to Oxford, England.  He began his career with IBM, and then worked in the computer industry for many years.  Graham opened the first retail computer store in Cobourg, years ahead of his time.

Although he dated the daughter of an Earl, he met and married the love of his life in Canada.  Graham’s final decades were spent in the “Old Oriental Hotel” in Castleton, which was converted from a bank into the family home.

Graham was passionate about community and heritage.  He served as the Executive Director of the Cobourg Chamber of Commerce, and spent many years as a Rotarian and with Probus, as well as helping form the first Board of The Mill at Piper Creek Arts and Heritage Centre in Castleton.  A generous man throughout his life, Graham has divided his entire estate amongst a number of charities, most of them local.  In lieu of flowers, gifts in his name may be made to the Castleton Sports Club or Northumberland Hills Hospital.

A Celebration of Graham’s Life will be held at Castleton United Church, 1815 Percy Street, Castleton at 2:30 pm on Friday, September 28, 2018.  Following the service, Graham’s ashes will be laid to rest beside Carol in Castleton Cemetery, with a reception to follow at the Church.   Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com.
