Obituary of GOTO: Catherine Mary of Burlington and formerly of Markham Ontario

Posted by on October 20, 2018

Catherine Mary Goto passed away peacefully at home in Burlington, Ontario on the evening of Monday, October 15th surrounded by the deep love of her family. Cathy was born on April 29th, 1947 in Urmston, Manchester England, the middle child of three to Anthony and Maria (née O’Shea) Boland. Cathy and her sister Jo-Anne, just thirteen months apart in age, were inseparable in life, and during their wild teenage years were often seen with little brother Michael in their charge, six years their junior. Cathy and her sister attended St. Patrick’s School in Winton, Manchester England.

At 20 years old, Cathy left home to seek new opportunities, boarding the Canadian Pacific Liner “Empress of England” to make the long voyage to Canada in the footsteps of her sister, Jo-Anne Boland. She settled in London, Ontario, quickly finding employment as a secretary to the director of engineering at General Steel Wares (GSW). It was in this position that she met an ‘exotic’ young man from Japan who was an engineering assistant at the same company, named George (Kazuhiro) Goto. After a whirlwind courtship period, the two were married in 1969, and welcomed four children: Natalie, Jason, Anthony and Daniel. While her children were young, Cathy devoted her time to creating a warm home for her family. Once her children began to leave the nest, she turned her thoughts to the start of an independent career outside of the home.

In 1995, Cathy took over a coffee shop in Markville Mall (Pam’s Coffee and Tea), spending countless hours running the store and interacting with the many customers who came to appreciate her attention to detail and razor sharp wit. Popular with customers and other workers in the mall, and not known for any shortage of an opinion, she soon garnered the unofficial title as “Queen of the Food Court”. The coffee shop was a second home for much of the Goto family during those years, with her two youngest children, Anthony and Daniel, working with her after school, and George giving her a chance to catch up on sleep by opening shop on the weekends. Although she enjoyed the community, Cathy and George decided to give up the store in 2001. In an effort to find a better balance in life, she began working nights at Celestica in Don Mills.  For three years, her glowing smile and sharp humour was a treat to many who worked with her. Next, Cathy decided to pursue her love of typing and language, and trained as a medical transcriptionist. She worked from home for a number of years before retiring with George in Burlington, Ontario.

Cathy will be greatly missed by her husband George, sister Jo-Anne, brother Michael, daughter Natalie (John) and sons Jason (Larissa), Anthony (Mira) and Daniel, and grandchildren Aidan, Cole, Samantha and Nigel.

We welcome all those who knew Cathy to join her family in a celebration of her life:

Obituary of Gander, George Chrisfield of Sarnia

GEORGE CHRISFIELD GANDER

“To love and be loved is to feel the sun from both sides”

Peacefully,  at St. Joseph’s Hospice on Friday, October 19, 2018 George Chrisfield Gander passed away at the age of 90. Beloved husband of the late Berenice Catherine Mott and the father of Georgia Gander (Will Bartlett) and Geoffrey Gander (Donna). Dearly loved by four grandchildren, Jesse Pumple, Heather Gander, Craig Gander and  Rachel Gander (Kyle Murray) and six great-grandchildren, Jack and Isaac Griffin,  Matthew and Lilah Gander, and Max and Blaire Murray.  He was predeceased by his three brothers, James, Robert and Ronald and will be greatly missed by his many nieces and nephews.

George, a life-long resident of Sarnia, proudly built his family home on Lakeshore Road, marked by the famous landmark, “The Ganders” sign. He  was a dedicated employee of Imperial Oil and Esso Chemicals for 40 years and a loyal member of the Royal Canadian Artillery and later C Squadron 1st Hussars. Travelling was a life-long passion he shared with Berenice and together they enjoyed frequent trips to Florida, where George was the president of The Canada Club.  After earning their pilot’s licenses, George and Berenice bought a Cessna and flew to many destinations. Master of all trades, George was cheerfully willing and able to lend a helping hand if there was something to fix or a problem to solve.  Always strong in his faith, George believed and reminded us often that “the best is yet to come”.

Friends will be received at the D. J. ROBB FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE on Tuesday, October 23 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 24 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Giles Presbyterian Church, 770 Lakeshore Road, with the Reverend Becky Roushorne-Lau officiating. A limb has fallen from the family tree that says, “Grieve not for me”.

the good life I lived while I was strong.
