BARNES: Ronald Arthur “Ron” “Barney”, of St. Thomas

Ronald Barnes 1Ronald Barnes 2

BARNES, Ronald Arthur “Ron” “Barney”, a lifelong resident of St. Thomas. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Dad, Ron Barnes at his home on September 20, 2013 at age 90.  He will be greatly missed by his family.

Ron was born in St. Thomas on January 2, 1923 to Arthur and Lilian (nee Fairweather) Barnes, who had both immigrated from England.

Gunner Barnes went into the service soon after WWII started and participated in the liberation of Holland in 1944-45 with the 4th Canadian Armoured Division, Division Artillery, and took great pride in being the driver for Brigadier Bud Drury.  He was also fortunate to return to Holland for the 50th and 60th anniversary celebrations and enjoyed meeting and visiting with so many of the wonderful Dutch people.

When the war ended, he became a retail merchant of men’s clothing on Talbot street, owning and operating his own business for many years.  During this time he played, coached, and sponsored basketball teams in the men’s city league, winning the Ontario Provincial (OABA) Championships in 1958 and 1960, and he continued to be associated with this group for over 60 years.

After retiring from the clothing business, he and a number of his buddies formed the U.K. Walkers and did many treks to England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, seeing the sites and hitting all the pubs before returning with fond memories of all the people they were fortunate enough to meet along the way.

Ron was predeceased by his wife Mignon (nee Moore) in 2009, and is survived by daughter Ronda and her husband Tom Wolf of London, son Steve of St. Thomas, sister Joan Blewett of Toronto, and sister-in-law Lillian Jones of Windsor.

Ron was a very proud volunteer, member and promoter of the Elgin Military Museum.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no public visitation or funeral service.  Memorial donations to the Elgin Military Museum gratefully acknowledged.  Arrangements entrusted to the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160).

Special thanks must go to his primary caregiver, Sheila Dunn, who was instrumental in making his last months comfortable, as well as all the CCAC personnel; Laura, Heather Janet, Jan, Carl, and Charlotte, who were important to his care in allowing him to stay at home.

After a 21 month struggle, finally, some peace in the hands of Our Lord.  A great lady, born May 4, 1915 to Amelie and Armand Baillargeon.   Loving wife of the late Thomas. She was also predeceased by her siblings Wallace, Olivier, Antoine, Antoinette, Henriette and husband Manuel. Survived by her brothers-in law and sisters-in-law Vickie and Lorraine Baillargeon, Harry and Geraldine Hayes, Noella Hayes (the late Jack), Charles and Ruth Hayes.  Dearest mother of Sue Dufour and husband Ray, Paul and wife Jackie, Robert and wife Sharon, Cathy Bauer and husband Rick, Michael and wife Colleen, Peter, Edward and wife Catrin, Patricia Nodder and husband Ron.  Enthusiastic and supportive grandmother of Renée, Dan, Laurie, Thomas, Peter, David, Michelle, Jillian, Christopher, Shelly, Matthew, Steven, Kelly, Katie and Andrew, great G.G. of 16.  A great lover of life, she met many challenges.  She began teaching in 1933 in a two room schoolhouse. From 1943-1965, she stayed home to raise her family, and returned to teaching until she retired in 1979.  She continued to tutor and mentor even after retiring.  Age was never an impediment.  She got her drivers’ license at age 73 and remained extremely active and involved with family and church.  She was an avid reader, “hooker”, rug hooking that is, gardener and lover of art, even discovering a love of painting at age 97.  She was an inspiration to all, and it was an honour to have her in our lives.  Special thanks to all the people who allowed mom to live her life independently at Lion’s Manor and those who cared for her at Huron Lodge.  If you so desire, donations to Ontario Heart & Stroke Foundation, Downtown Mission or Charity of Choice would be appreciated by the family.
