SAVAGE: Gordon John

Posted by on May 27, 2015

Veteran and life-long resident of Sarnia, Gordon passed away at Vision Nursing Home surrounded by family, on Sunday, May 24, 2015, at age 88.  Predeceased by his first wife Isabelle (O’Donnell, 1980) and wife Margaret (Tait, 1998), as well as his brothers Charlie (Ada) (1982) and Sid (1974), and his sister Winnie (LaVerne) Rice (2002).  Survived by nieces Linda (Jeff) Naylor, Mary Inglis, nephews Mike (Maureen) Wilkins and Paul (Gayle) Rice, and dear friend Dora Chalmers, as well as many other brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. After his discharge from the army, Gord worked for Prestolite, where he met his future wife Isabelle, and then worked for the Sarnia Board of Education until his retirement. From his early years, Gord enjoyed hunting and fishing, first with his father, then with his buddies and other family members.  It didn’t much matter if they caught anything, as long as they could enjoy the fellowship of one another.  Until his health declined, in retirement he enjoyed the fellowship of the Sarnia Golden ‘K’ Kiwanis and his many friends at Central Baptist Church. For eighty-five years Gordon enjoyed a quality of life that enabled him to make the most of each day.  First with Isabelle, then with Margaret and finally with Dora, his life was complete, whether by the river in Sarnia or at his cottage in Tobermory.  Although his last three years were challenging, he faced his limitations with the same smile, sense of humour, and the joy of company that characterized his life. The family is most grateful to the management and staff at Vision Nursing Home who treated him with such compassion and caring. To him, Vision was home. A funeral service will be held to celebrate Gordon’s life at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Saturday, May 30, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., with interment in Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery, Sarnia.  A reception for family and friends will follow at the Smith Family Centre. As expressions of sympathy, the family would appreciate donations through a memorial donation to the Student Nutrition Program of Lambton County.
