Cherished Abuela “Mama Lucita” of Ana Maria and Hermes, Claudia and Mike, Jose, Manuel L., Oscar, Manuel M., Maria, Alexandra, Peter, and predeceased by Hugo M. Dear sister of Elba Montoya and husband Angel.   Maria Luz will be sadly missed by her great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins, along with many family and friends both from Canada, U.S.A. and El Salvador. Maria Luz was everyone’s “Abuela” and devoted her life to care for her family and friends. She was a talented seamstress and was a strong woman of faith. Peacefully at her home at the age of 87. Reunited and holding hands again with her beloved husband and friend Dante (1999). Devoted mother to Piera “Peach” & Ivan Pessotto and Maria & Pat Rocca. Proudest Nonna of Ivan Jr. & Alynn Pessotto, Sara & Peter Soldevilla, Daniel Rocca & Claire Bebbington, Elizabeth & Marco Sperduti and Bis-Nonna to Noah, Jack, and Liam Pessotto, Dante and Leela Soldevilla. Predeceased by parents Pietro & Maria Pivetta and sister Pierina Pivetta. Survived by sister-in-law Irma Piccinin and many nieces and nephews. Nonna was a long-time member (Exclusive Club) and volunteer of the Canadian Cancer Society. An avid seamstress and knitter of countless “nonna slippers” still warming feet today. Isabelle PettusPETTUS, Mrs. Isabelle (nee Barber), of Port Stanley, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, December 18, 2015, in her 92nd year. Dear mother of Sharon Pettus-Giles of Union, Jerry Pettus and his wife Sue of Port Stanley, and the late Shirley Joan Pettus (1997). Also survived by three grandchildren, six great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her daughter, Isabelle was predeceased by three brothers, William A. Barber, Clayton D. Barber and John Louis McAtee, and by three grandsons. Born in Windsor, ON, April 12, 1924, she was the daughter of the late William and Emily (nee Marrs) Barber. Isabelle worked as a Registered Nursing Assistant at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital for many years. She was a member of Faith Church, St. Thomas, and was a former teacher with the Elgin Area Bible Club. Relatives and friends will be received by the family on Monday afternoon, December 21st from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160). On December 14, surrounded by his family around his usual bedtime, Brian took his last walk down the fairway. He was born January 9, 1941 to Margaret and Tom Hogan. Loyal brother to Jim Hogan (Jaye) and uncle to Kevin, Sean, and Ryan. Pre-deceased by sister and brother – in-law Bev and Mike Schneider and uncle of Dr. Ken Schneider (who we owe special thanks to), Michelle Byrne and Keith (pre-deceased). On January 14, 1961, Brian married the love of his life Barbara (nee Parent) beginning their adventures together. Most devoted Dad of Colleen & Bob Mitchell, Craig & Julie Hogan, Christine & David Suzor, and Cathie Hogan and special friend Dean Sinasac.
Inspirational, role model, and greatest fan to grandchildren, Stevin, Shaun and Reid; Shannon, Chloe, Cara Grace and Liam; Natalie and Brendan; Sophia, Sante & Teo and four great-grandchildren. Blessed with so many beautiful friends and neighbours here and in Florida.
Brian worked his whole career, for 35 years, at Hiram Walker & Sons. Passionate about his community, he was a former President of United Way and the Red Cross Society; former board member of St. Clair College and Harmony In Action. Avid year round golfer and sports fan – he loved his Detroit Red Wings and Windsor Spitfires.

GILLIES, James “Jim” McPhail of Toronto

Gillies, JamesJim passed peacefully at North York General Hospital in Toronto on Sunday, December 13. He is missed by his loving family, many friends and colleagues.

Jim was born in the village of Teeswater in Western Ontario to Dr. M.H. Gillies and his wife Gladys, a family that was part of the town and region from its earliest days. At 17, Jim attended the University of Western Ontario, and majored in Economics. His time at Western was interrupted by the war when Jim joined the RCAF in 1944 and served as air crew overseas. Upon his return Jim finished his degree with honours and decided to continue his education at Brown University in the USA where he earned an MA. Jim continued his education at Indiana University where he was granted his PhD in Urban Land Economics. After graduation, Jim accepted a professorship at UCLA in California where he rose to prominence in his field, gained his full professorship and was assistant Dean. Jim married his wife Betsy and welcomed children David and Cathy at this time.

Jim was always longing to return to Canada and his family in Ontario. In 1965, the opportunity arose for him to return to act as the founding Dean of the Faculty of Administrative Studies at York University – now the Schulich School of Business. Over seven years Jim built the school from a big idea into the strong base for what is one of the leading schools in North America today. During this period Jim made many friends and grew strong relationships throughout the Canadian business community. He served on many corporate boards and helped establish a world-class zoo in Toronto. Jim and Betsy welcomed children James and Ted during this time. He loved the time with his family. Christmas was always special as were many, many memorable summers in Pointe-au-Baril, Muskoka and the Bruce Peninsula.

In 1972, Jim ran for parliament, winning a seat in the Don Valley riding in Toronto and going on to act as shadow finance minister in the PC opposition to the Trudeau Government. He won reelection to a second term in Don Valley in 1975. Jim ran for leadership of the PC party towards the end of his second term in parliament, throwing his support toward the eventual winner Joe Clark. Jim served as senior policy advisor to the Prime Minister during the Clark government, accompanying him to the G7 Tokyo summit.

After his time in government, Jim returned as a professor at York University, in the school of business. He was instrumental in continuing to build the school he founded to the stature it has today. Jim chaired several programs while at York, most recently the Canada-Russia Corporate Governance Program. He always had great passion and energy for teaching business students, being with them and sharing in their fresh ideas and enthusiasm. Jim has a great many friends and colleagues from this time both in academia and in the business community where he was a member of several corporate boards.

Jim was honored in many ways for his dedication to education and public service. He was awarded honorary doctorates from York, Simon Fraser and the Moscow Higher School of Economics. At York, Jim was awarded the title of University Professor. As a proud Canadian he was deeply honored by the award of the Order of Canada for his contributions to education.

Jim leaves behind a loving family: his wife of 62 years Betsy, children David (Kathy), Cathy, James (Cindy) and Ted (Jacquie), grandchildren Jackie, Gwen, James and David and several nieces and nephews. Jim was the last surviving member of his family, being predeceased by his siblings, Helen Wilson (James), Don (Francis) and John (Poppy). Even with his successful career in many capacities, Jim held dear most of all, family, friends and his roots as a small town boy from Teeswater, Ontario.

A funeral service to commemorate Jim’s life will be held at the Teeswater United Church (13 Elizabeth Street South), Teeswater on Saturday, January 2nd, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. He will be laid to rest in the family plot at Culross-Teeswater Cemetery. A Celebration of Life to be held in Toronto in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Teeswater Town Hall Renovation Fund (cheques payable to Municipality of South Bruce) would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.

Clancy MacCallumMACCALLUM – Lindley Klay “Clancy” of St. Thomas, Ont. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at the age of 69, with his loving family by his side.  Predeceased by his dear wife Ava MacCallum (nee Beaton) (2001).  Adored by children Michael “Micky” (Tammy) MacCallum and Lisa (Mike) Smith all of St. Thomas. BairdThomas1Passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at Bluewater Health in Sarnia.   THOMAS BAIRD of Brights Grove, was in his 90th year. Born in Scotland, Tom was the son of the late John and Elizabeth Baird. Tom immigrated to Canada in the 1950’s. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Helen (nee Randall). He will be missed by his sisters-in-law June Maginn and Janet Randall and his nieces and nephews Brenda, Keith, Jim, Eric, and Cathy, who will all miss his well-timed sense of humour. He was predeceased by his brothers-in-law Bruce Maginn and Ross Randall. Tom served during World War II with the British Air Force. Tom was a retiree of Imperial Oil and spent his free time sailing, curling, and golfing.   A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment will be in Hillsdale Cemetery, Petrolia. KIRKLAND: Richard “Dick” Eric of Point Edward

Passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at St. Joseph’s Hospice on December 17, 2015 at the age of 83.  Beloved husband for 63 years of Pauline.  Adored father of Clarke (Chuck) of Toronto, Karen of Point Edward, Tom (Deb) of Bright’s Grove and Ted (Lori) of Point Edward.  Proud papa of Kate (Kyle), Michael, Annie, Lindsay and Brooke.  Predeceased by his father Norman (1956), mother Cora (1968), brother Bob (1996) and sister Shirley (1990).  Dick was deeply devoted to his family and was passionate about his birthplace.  He was so proud of his Point Edward birth certificate!  Dick was dedicated to the growth, prosperity and independence of The Village during countless years as Mayor, (Deputy) Reeve, Councilor and County Councilor.  He served and supported many commissions and community groups including the Point Edward Volunteer Fire Department, the Fish Hatchery and the Tuscan Lodge.  Dick was inducted three times to the Sports Hall of Fame for his accomplishments in hockey and softball and for leading teams to Ontario Champions as both coach and player.
Family and friends will be received on Sunday, December 20, 2015, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1576 London Line, Sarnia. Suddenly, at Joseph Brant Hospital, Burlington, on Wednesday, December 16, 2015, in his 86th year. Beloved husband of the late June (née McLeod, 1957) and the late Edna (née Braid, 2007). Loving father of Nancy Kendall (Bob) and Allan Cassidy. Missed by grandchildren Christopher (Kelly) and Stephanie (Michael); great-grandchildren Ethan, Kaylyn, Landon, Teagan and Rylan; brother Merv (Sharon); nephew Byron Grant (Ann). Predeceased by his sister, Isabelle Grant. Al was a long-time employee at Kellogg’s, where he built many friendships that he had long cherished throughout the years. Al was well-known in the fly fishing community.
