FLETCHER: LUCY REBECCA (nee Taker) of Ottawa

Posted by on March 22, 2016

images-4Dec. 5, 1926 — March 17, 2016

The effervescent and restless spirit of Lucy Fletcher (nee Taker), Ottawa, left this world on St. Patrick’s Day, 2016, at age 89 — no doubt in search of new adventures!

Born in Timmins, Ont., she grew up in New Glasgow, N.S., and remained a Maritimer at heart. She was predeceased by parents Percy and Bertie (nee Keating) Taker, brothers Laurence [“Tiny”] and Roy Taker and sister Greta (Don) Macdonald. She is survived by sons Don (Mary Jo), Paul (Annie), daughters Marla and Becky (Ken) and sister Blanche (Reg) Kendall, former partner Donald Fletcher and grandchildren Chelsey, Dana, Ian, Jacob, Kevin, Leo and Meghan.
Lucy was a determined, proud woman who gave her all raising four children to each become strong, creative and independent individuals. Her secretarial work served her well in educational, banking, real estate, military, legal and government settings over the years. She valued education highly, and constantly encouraged those around her to continue learning and seize every opportunity to better themselves. She loved music – especially jazz – as well as reading, gardening, travel and being in the company of family and friends. She had a wicked sense of humour, always ready to share a laugh or an adventure.

A compassionate and loyal friend, Lucy was also an unforgettable daughter, sister, mother, aunt and grandmother who will be sadly missed.

Visitation will be at the Westboro Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 403 Richmond Rd., Ottawa, on Wed. March 23, 2016, 1-2 pm followed by service in the chapel at 2 pm. Burial to follow at Pinecrest Cemetery. If you’d like to make a charitable donation in Lucy’s name to the Alzheimer Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County, that would be very much appreciated.

MACKENZIE: DONALD of GUILDWOOD Formerly of Lloydminster, AB

Posted by on March 22, 2016

images-4Donald Allen MacKenzie (1928-2016)
“Peace, peace, he is not dead, he doth not sleep. He hath awakened from the dream of life. “

Donald Allen MacKenzie, 87, of Guildwood, ON passed away peacefully on March 17, 2016 – “one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold … summer in the light and winter in the shade”. Married to the late Eileen (Jennings) for 48 years, he was born to Gaetane (Major) of Labelle, QC and Norman MacKenzie of Grey, ON on Nov. 5th, 1928 (Guy Fawkes Day in his words) in Lloydminster, AB. He had 3 brothers: Keith, Roger, Ross, and 2 sisters: Gladys, Carol.
Don enjoyed sharing colourful accounts of prairie life. At 12, Don moved to Toronto and worked as a postman, farmhand, merchant marine, and more before attending night school to become a teacher then principal. Helping children succeed was his passion and he spent 33 years with the Scarborough Board. Don developed breakfast and after school programs in his school communities.
Don developed a love of the outdoors while working in lumber camps and enjoyed cottage life until he and Eileen decided to explore the world by car. A favourite was Williamsburg to see flowers bloom. He usually was found in his garden with his vegetables, fruit trees, and flowers (fending off squirrels) or in his workshop making yet another project. Don had great fun at golf, bridge, and winning at poker.
Don will be missed by his children: Jennifer (Jamie Guolla) and Katherine (Chris Lynch); and grandchildren: Philip, Christine, Anthony, Marion and Alex. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Don’s life on Saturday, March 26th, at 1-3:00pm at The Chartwell Livingston Lodge, 65 Livingston Rd, Scarborough, ON, MIE 1L1. WOOLFORD: Frederick William “Bill” of Toronto

Posted by on March 22, 2016

images-4Originally published in The Globe & Mail and Toronto Star:

WOOLFORD, F. William

Died gently at home on Saturday, the 22nd of November, 2014 at 97 years of age. We should all wish for the full life Bill had: two wonderful marriages, loving family and friends, a fulfilling and productive career, a strong faith. He was a Boy Scout Leader; a Lieutenant in the Canadian Army; a columnist by the name of ‘Al Gonk’, in the Algonquin (Toronto) Island community newspaper; a choir member; a church elder and the first Clerk of Session at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church (Don Mills); a Sunday School teacher; a teacher of knot-tying; a fine dancer; a sharp dresser; a gardener; a teller of jokes; a life-long Maple Leaf fan; a fitness enthusiast; an artist/calligrapher; a volunteer throughout his life; and in his 80’s, the driving force to develop a summer day camp to help parents and children in the Don Mills and Flemingdon Park communities. And always a gentleman. Bill followed the teachings of God all his life. Wherever Bill saw a need he would try to meet it and expected others to do the same. He embraced everyone he met and he went the extra mile in every endeavour.

Bill was born to Fred and Ethel (nee Shephard) Woolford on the 10th of September, 1917 in Ottawa, Ontario. He grew up in Toronto, attended Central Technical School, worked initially as a wax engraver at Rapid, Grip and Batten, and eventually as a printing salesman for Atwell Fleming Printing Company. He married Mary Helen Ross on the 10th of March, 1945. They had three children, Lorraine, Janice and Ross. They lived in North Toronto in their early marriage, moving first to Toronto Island, and then settling in Don Mills just as it was developing. Three years after Mary died (at the age of 65), Bill married a family friend, Margaret Watson (nee Wickham), also widowed, on the 5th of May, 1991. Interestingly, when Margaret was young, she was girlhood friends with Mary Ross; later, Marg worked for Bill’s father and was instrumental in introducing Bill to Mary.

Bill was predeceased by his older brother, Len, whom he looked up to and admired his entire life. He leaves behind his dear wife, Margaret; his three children, Lorraine, Janice and Ross; his stepchildren, Dianne Cruise and Philip Watson; his collected grandchildren, Anna Trbovich, David Black, Emma Woolford, Kimberly Black, Kristen Black, James Black, Connor Cruise, Justin Watson, Cody Watson and Taylor Watson. Bill lived long enough to meet some of the next generation, including Anna’s sons, Ross and Kenneth Hamilton. Heartfelt thanks to Esther Arthurton, Tracey Blake and Karen Francis, who provided Bill with tender, loving care for the past four and a half years. Bill touched the lives of so many people. He will be deeply missed.

A memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Presbyterian Church, 1 Greenland Road, Toronto, on Saturday, the 29th of November, 2014 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the organization that you believe makes the world a better place.
