Parker, Marion “Katie” (nee Vair)

Posted by on April 13, 2016

Marion “Katie” Alemath Parker (nee Vair)ParkerMarion

Left this world to be with her Lord on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at Woods Park Care Centre in Barrie at 97 years of age. Marion was a devoted Christian and an active member of Trinity Anglican Church in Barrie and St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Minden.

Marion was born in Allendale and over the years lived in Barrie, Minden and at her cottage on Naiscoot Lake. From her early years Marion loved sports and played basketball and volleyball at Barrie Collegiate Institute where she was given the nickname Katie, which she kept for the rest of her life. Later she loved to lawn bowl and curl, and was a member of the Barrie and Minden Curling Clubs. In 2005 she celebrated 50 consecutive years of curling with family, friends, and fellow curlers. Also an avid CFL fan she hosted and participated in Grey Cup parties along with her husband Elton for many years. Katie was also a crack shot with a rifle and in her earlier years often went duck hunting in the fall with Elton. She wrote poetry and was dedicated to sharing her experience at her beloved cottage, “How Come” through her journals.

Katie loved and was married to Elton Parker for 44 exciting years until his passing in 1984. Although she was an only child she started to become a very large family beginning with her four children, Jon (Gloria), Brian (Joan), Jamie (Sandy) and she always said she “finally got it right” when she had a girl, Noni (Stephen). She had eight grandchildren, Brydon, Stirling, Amy, Joel, Amanda, Matthew, Sean and Ian. Then came along ten great-grandchildren, Meghan, Ruthie, Caleb, Jacob, Jack, Cole, William, Beau, Seth and Sadey. In Katie’s words, “Holy Dum Doodle!”

Cremation has taken place and a celebration to honour her life will be held a later date. ADAMS FUNERAL HOME (445 St. Vincent Street, Barrie) in care of arrangements. Messages of condolence may be forwarded to the family through adamsfuneralhome.ca

We would like to acknowledge the very special companionship and friendship provided by Laura Amon over the last 10 years. Through her visits she became like one of Marion’s family and spent many wonderful hours with her. We are also very grateful to and wish to extend our special thanks to her warm and caring care givers on the 2nd and 3rd floors at Woods Park Care Centre and to Dr. McConvey for his compassionate care.

HORNER, Barbara deLourdes of Point Edward

Horner-web

Obituary – Barbara deLourdes Horner (Britt) Peacefully, at St. Joseph’s Hospice, Barbara Horner, of Point Edward, passed away surrounded by her loving family. Predeceased by her husband Clark Horner (2005), son Jon Horner (2015), parents Jule and Sal, and sister Dawn Marie.

Beloved mother of Beverley Hand (George), Jerry Horner (Lori), Ronald Horner (Marilyn). Cherished mother-in-law of Becky-Wellington Horner. Loving grandmother and great-grandmother of Brett, Lyndsay (Jesse), Samantha, Zac (Teri), Sean (Amanda), Mackenzie (Nathan), Tristian, Teegan, and Cadence.

Barbara was a former Councilor and Mayor of the Village of Point Edward as well as past Warden of Lambton County.

Barbara Horner was first elected to the Point Edward Council in 1977 and served the Village for a total of 18 years. In her political career, Barbara was a trend setter. She was the first female councilor, deputy reeve, and deputy mayor which all contributed to her accomplishing her ultimate goal of becoming the first female Mayor of Point Edward from 1997 to 2000.

In 1984, she was elected by her peers to become the first Lady Warden of Lambton County.

Another highlight of Barb’s life was being the Chairman of the Board of Lambton College for four consecutive years. This opportunity included a 4 week Asian tour to open a relationship with China to establish an academic partnership.

Barbara very much enjoyed her many years in politics. She often said, most politicians were pleasant, outgoing people, who were a pleasure to work with.  During her term as Mayor in 2000, her council simultaneously negotiated the opening of the Point Edward Casino and the first contract for OPP policing. This was a year of many accomplishments.

Her childhood was highlighted by many moves across Canada due to her fathers’ career with Zellers. She enjoyed spending this time with her only, and beloved, sister, Dawn Marie, as well as with her parents, Jule and Sal.

In 1952, Barbara married Clark Horner and they settled in Point Edward, his home. She quickly realized the joys of a small town, where everybody knows your name.  Barbara has developed many cherished friendships over the years and greatly enjoyed the shared vacations in Treasure Island.

Through 53 years together, Barb and Clark supported each other in all endeavors and were best friends during their marriage. They raised their four children and enjoyed the company of their children’s spouses, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, building a large, loving, family.

Resting at the D. J. ROBB FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION CENTRE where services will be held on Friday April 15th at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at Lakeview Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from the hours of 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the Canadian Breast Cancer Society.

Special thanks to nurse Sheila from the VON, St. Joseph’s Hospice and doctors Crombeen and Maddison for their sincere care and support to our Mom.

Dykstra, Ena

At the age of 92, on Monday, April 11th, 2016, Ena Dykstra (nee Postma) passed away peacefully just as the sun broke through the cloudy sky to bless her with a sweet, sun-kissed passage to heaven where she was reunited with her beloved husband Tom.  Ena was born the last of 10 children in Friesland, Holland and immigrated to Canada in 1948.  She was a devoted wife, loving mother and loyal sister. Ena was a model of goodness, justice and honesty and was always supportive of family and offered care and compassion to those in need.  Ena was a highly skilled knitter and a wonderful cook whose meals will always be remembered by all who enjoyed them; she was a very intelligent lady with a gift for language, who never failed at any task put before her.

Ena will be greatly missed by her sons Cecil and John Dykstra; daughter-in-law Shirley; grandchildren Tracy, Tom and Bev; niece Greitje; and many great-grandchildren and friends.  Ena was predeceased by her parents and siblings, her beloved husband Tom, infant daughter Margaret, grandson Steven and granddaughter Angie.

Ena always adored children and was a captivating story-teller.  During the last months of her journey, Odie Bartlett brought Ena great joy by sharing stories, songs, dances, smiles and hugs.  Odie and all of Ena’s grandchildren will forever remember that she taught us how to play Checkers, the true meaning of fairness and family values.

Ena will be missed by many people in many places. May there be solace in knowing that her last days were spent in the most wonderful care at McGarrell Place Nursing Home, London. Family and friends are invited to a visitation on Thursday, April 14th, 2016 from 7-9pm at Denning’s of Strathroy. A Celebration of Ena’s Life will be held on Friday, April 15th at 1pm at Denning’s of Strathroy.

Allen Herbert low pixOur Bert slipped away peacefully in his sleep in the dawning hours of Thursday April 7, 2016, roughly three months shy of his 90th birthday .

Born in June 1926 at 37 Sutton Road, Newport Monmouthshire (Wales), Bert soon developed a lifelong passion for fishing, model trains, stamps and coins.

After completing his high school “A” levels, he enlisted with the 1st Welsh Guards in the mid-1940s and ultimately found himself dispatched to the City of Haifa in Palestine (now in Israel) where he and his comrades provided internal security for the British Army which was caught in-between a brutal ethnic combat.

While it’s not certain, Bert’s early fascination with model trains may have sparked his interest in electricity, as after the conclusion of his enlistment he opted to attend trade school where he completed his electrical certification and subsequent apprenticeship ultimately becoming a licenced electrician.

In 1952 he married the stylish Eveline (nee Jones) and the newlyweds quickly settled in the village of Rogerstone Wales. Initially Bert pursued his trade in nearby Newport – that is until Eve made a trip to visit her father who was living in Canada. When Eve returned to Wales she was exhilarated by what she had seen on her expedition and, after abundant cajoling, eventually convinced Bert to cross the great pond with her.

After touring parts of Canada, the couple briefly settled in Bowmanville, then moved on down the Queen’s highway to Cobourg in the late 1950s where Bert had secured an opportunity to work in partnership with a local electrician. Around the same time Eve found work with Eldorado Nuclear in Port Hope, where she assumed the role of admin assistant for the plant’s General Manager.  Several years later, when Bert’s business partner passed away he decided to close the business and ply his trade elsewhere, finding a position in the rapidly expanding General Foods plant, which was subsequently acquired by Kraft Foods.

Aside from work, perhaps Bert’s proudest achievement was the unfaltering effort he and a small cadre of Legion friends made to bring the Cobourg Legion Village into existence.

Predeceased by his cherished wife Eve, and his only sibling, Lilian Mary Moses of Lockrose Australia, Bert’s lusty welsh accent and wry humor will be fondly remembered by his remaining family and many friends, including the denizens of Cobourg’s Rankin Boulevard, the members of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 133, the inhabitants of Cobourg’s Legion Village, his Personal Service Workers not to mention the residents and the caring staff of Extendicare Port Hope, the latter  who provided a peaceful sanctuary for Burt over the past three years.

Bert is survived by his brother-in-law Elwyn Moses, two nieces; Marie–Louise and Sarah, as well as his nephew Julian, all of whom reside in New South Wales, Australia.

Friends and acquaintances are warmly invited to attend a farewell celebration of Bert’s life which will take place on Thursday April 14th 2016 at MacCoubrey Funeral Home 30 King Street East in Cobourg. That day visitation will commence at 10 am, followed by a memorial service at 11 am, and subsequent refreshments, reminiscences and general fellowship in the MacCoubrey Reception Centre.

Members of RCL 133 are encouraged to gather at 10:45 for an 11 am walk through.

All are welcome to attend and celebrate Bert’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation, or a worthy charity of your choice. Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com.
