He frequently provided aid and  comfort to accident victims and lost friends to mountain driving.  He trained others to drive truck and  helped set guidelines for safer trucking practices. The Dirty Dozen is blazing new trails now.

Ric lived life with joy and passion and accepted all that life brought him, whether good or bad. He loved completely. He travelled, he drove fast and well. He saw beauty in life. He laughed and sang. HINES: Doug of Toronto

1934-2017, John Douglas Hines
With deep sadness, we wish to communicate the passing of “Doug” Hines – a long-time resident of the GTA, also known as Papa Smurf, Wee Dougie, Cowboy Doug and Big “D,” in his eighty-fourth year.  In his final moments, at Etobicoke General hospital, Doug experienced the profound joy of having his loving children, grandchildren and great grandchild by his side.   He will be greatly missed by his children Michael Hines, Catherine (Betsy) Hines, and James (Jamie) Hines; grandchildren, Sarah Hines, Alex Hines, Hudson Hines, Christen Latham, Rebecca Laffrade, James Wimpory, & Ashley Hines, and great grandchildren, Wynter Zuch, Charlie Laffrade, Carter Laffrade, and by countless extended relatives and friends.  Doug was pre-deceased by his parents Catherine Hines (nee McClelland) and John Hines, sister Marilyn “Sissy” Ball (the late Karl), and is survived by his sister, Jeanne Fry (Allan) and nephew Jeff. Doug loved his family with his entire being and had tremendous pride in his heart for his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  We are eternally grateful that Doug has left us a legacy of love.
Doug enjoyed the outdoors, but only from his horse or a convertible, or by the BBQ. His love of dogs and horses were his passions, along with his great love of sports – auto-racing, hockey and football, in particular. We will all miss those special times with him while he enjoyed and shared his passions & his great love of unique comments & profanity not just while watching sports but reading the paper and especially while driving.
Friends and family are invited to email celebratingdoughines@gmail.com for information regarding a Tapenade and Caesars celebration in toasting Doug on Saturday, November 25th, from 2pm-4pm. These were his favorite weekend specialties. Anyone who knew Doug, was also aware that he had an enormous passion for horses. In lieu of flowers, he would love donations be made in his name to Whispering Hearts Horse Rescue at www.whhrescue.com or please give to Pancreatic Cancer Canada to a personal page at http://donate.pancreaticcancercanada.ca/site/TR/DIY-FundraiseforUs/DIY-FundraiseforUs?px=1150296&pg=personal&fr_id=1296

He was born in the early 50’s and was raised in an orphanage, he had many struggles in life from being physically disabled from birth to not knowing his birth parents. He walked threw his entire life with positivity and spiritual growth. He was outgoing and would take the time out of his day for any stranger. He worked as a nurse when I was born, then became a youth outreach and family support worker, he eventually went back to nursing but in between he worked in the homeless shelter in Victoria. Everything he did and everywhere he went he left an impression with people. He is going to be missed in many communities and many hearts, but mostly missed by his only son who he was very proud of.
