HORNER: Marjorie Eileen of Truro, Nova Scotia

Posted by on April 22, 2016

images-4Marjorie Eileen (Midge) Horner

With great sadness, we announce the passing of our mother, Marjorie Eileen ‘Midge’ Horner (nee Little), on March 29, 2016, at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre in Amherst, Nova Scotia, aged 85 years.

Born in Antigonish, Nova Scotia on July 24, 1930, our Mom was the eldest child of the late Dr. Perley and Eileen (MacKinlay) Little. Predeceased by her husband of 50 years, William Norval (Bill) Horner in 2003, she is survived by her four children: Deborah Elliott, Truro, David (Bianca) of Halifax, Dan (Sharon) of Shortts Lake, Nova Scotia and Douglas (Melinda) of Iqaluit, Nunavut; nine grandchildren: Miranda (nee Elliott) (Chris) Bates and Morgan (Becky Lavers) Elliott, both of Truro, William (Netherlands) and Bryce (Bedford) Horner, Sam and Emma Horner, both of Toronto, Ontario and Louisa, Lauren and Luella Horner in Iqaluit all of whom she loved dearly and was inordinately proud. ‘SuperNana’ will be sorely missed by her adored great-grandchildren Matilda and Beatrice Bates and Charlie and Piper Elliott who enjoyed their trips to visit her at the big house up on the hill.

Midge is also survived by her only brother Jim (Joanne) Little, Londonderry and her youngest sister Judy Little (Doug Pilon), Carrolls Corner, Nova Scotia, brothers-in-law Keith Horner, Shawville, PQ and Donald Dods, Shawville, PQ and Bedford, NS and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters Joan Potter and Katherine Grainger, sisters-in-law Lois Elliott, Mayfred Dods, Shirley Horner and brothers-in-law Hal Grainger, Dr. Bruce Horner and Fred Elliott.

Not only a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, our Mom was tireless in her participation in her community and as a member of many organizations, clubs and committees, most recently the Colchester Hospital Auxiliary, the Colchester Historeum, the Marigold Guild of Needle Arts and the Embroiderers’ Association of Canada. Working to benefit the hospital, Mom spent many years volunteering for the annual Hubbub and ultimately as convener of that event in 2005. More recently, she enjoyed volunteering at the Historeum as a hostess and helping to develop displays, especially when they featured the Marigold Guild, as it did through ‘An Exhibit of Needlework’ in 2006.

The Marigold Guild of Needle Arts was our mother’s brainchild (and at times we teased, her greatest love). Gathering 42 women into her home in 1983 and using her subtle determination, she was able to create the Truro Chapter of the EAC. Thirty three years of ‘stitch ins’ later, it is still an active and vibrant Guild. To roughly quote a Guild member, Mom was the founder and always the driving force behind the MGNA, serving as the first President and twenty-eight years later offering to fill that vacant position again, even as health challenges slowed her down. She has served in most, if not all, the executive positions and committee leads and continued to fill a key role even as her debilitating health stopped her from creating her own true masterpieces. Mom was instrumental in encouraging the Guild’s annual retreat which began in 1989 and continues to this day and she was the originator of the idea of the ‘Tapestry of Historic Truro: 1875-1925’, leading that project through some 2000 hours from inception to its unveiling at the then Colchester Historical Society Museum in 1997. Designated a ‘Master Craftsman in Pulled Thread’ by the Embroiderers’ Association of Canada, our modest mother was surprised and honoured to be awarded the EAC national honour service pin in 2011 in recognition of her lifelong promotion of the art.

Following us to school and athletic events, ski hills and riding rings, she encouraged and was always our greatest fan. Mom loved to travel and our annual ski trips, family reunions and other trips afar with our father, family and friends were enjoyed immensely and summers at Shortts Lake were a major part of our lives.

Our mother was a lady of the old school, always maintaining a grace, conviction and determination that belied her unpretentious demeanor. She was our foundation and our confidant. In her quiet, selfless way, she loved and directed each of us through the paths that life took us, always there, always supportive and always encouraging. She was unique in her relationships with each of us and loyal to our individualities, sometimes recognizing our value when we ourselves may not. She rejoiced in our successes and commiserated in our losses. We loved her absolutely.

We would like to extend a special recognition to Eileen Tooker, Mom’s friend and companion, who allowed Mom to continue to enjoy life with less restraint than her disabilities in recent times would normally have allowed.

We wish to thank Dr. Andrea Faryniuk and the entire staff of the 2nd floor surgical wing of the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre for their patient and compassionate care over this last year.

As was our mother’s request, cremation has taken place and there will be no formal or religious service. Instead, an informal gathering in fond remembrance will be held on April 3, 2016 in the Birch Room at the Holiday Inn, Prince Street, Truro between the hours of 1 pm and 3 pm for all those that may wish to attend.

No flowers by request. In Memoriam, donations may be made to the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre Surgical Unit, the Colchester East Hants Health Care Centre, the Colchester Historeum or the Marigold Guild of Needle Arts. Thank you.
