Michael Robert Muir, 74, of Bright’s Grove, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 16, 2014. Mike was born to the late William Muir and M.J. Elizabeth (Betty) Couse, November 22, 1939, in El Centro, Columbia. His family returned to Sarnia when he was three years old. Mike was a son of Sarnia.
Mike graduated from S.C.I.T.S in 1958 where he was a celebrated track star, breaking sprinting records he held for years. He spent a year in North Dakota on a hockey scholarship. He loved hockey and played for the Sarnia Legionnaires for two years, scoring two goals in game seven of the 1956/7 season to secure the team’s first championship.
Mike married Joan (nee Size), from London, in 1960 and they started a family in Sarnia. For 10 years he worked with Dupont then decided to return to school where he earned his BA from the University of Western Ontario in 1973. A year later he received his teacher’s certificate from the Ontario College of Teachers.
Although his goal was to teach, Mike chose a different path to support his family. He went into real estate and then found his way to Union Carbide where he was instrumental in hiring a significant number of employees for the new Mooretown plant’s opening in 1977. Mike was moved to head office in Toronto while the company was negotiating easements for the Red Deer pipeline project, where his real estate experience came into play. Eventually, he returned to Sarnia and finished his career with the company, now known as Nova Chemicals, in the lab as a quality control analyst. He retired in 2004 after 27 years of service with the company.
Mike’s years in retirement, all too short, were spent in Ipperwash during the warm months, and Longboat Key, FL in the cold ones, with a few months at their home in Sarnia, and later Bright’s Grove, in between. He loved his family, adored his grandchildren and will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know him.
Mike is survived by his wife Joan; three children: Lori Muir, of Barbados; Stephen Muir, of Bright’s Grove; and Ted Muir and wife Nuala, of Paris, ON; four grandchildren: Anna, Michael, Owen and Olivia; brother William Muir and wife Rikky, of Bright’s Grove; two sisters: Maureen Cachia and husband Tony, of Newmarket; and Linda Glendon and husband Bill, of Sarnia; extended family Stephen and Susan Size, of London; and Mary Jean and John Tempelhoff, of Durban, S.A.; and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be received at SMITH FUNERAL HOME 1576 London Line, Sarnia on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 from 5 to 8 p.m. The celebration of Mike’s life, led by his sister-in-law Susan Size, will be held at Smith Funeral Home on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at 1:30 p.m., followed by interment at Lakeview Cemetery and a gathering back at the Smith Family Centre (across from the funeral home).
