After a courageous battle with cancer, John Middleton, of Horseshoe Valley, has played his final card. The longtime area chef, Texas hold ’em player, brother, son and friend bowed out on Sunday, Sept. 15, 2013. The man with the Lanny McDonald moustache was 15 days from his 57th birthday. John attended Eastview Secondary School and began dabbling in the restaurant business before leaving Barrie for the adventure of exploring the wilds of Alberta in the mid-70s and 80s, where stints in various kitchens gave staff there a chance to experience his sense of humour and enjoy his company. After returning to Ontario, the kitchens called again, along with catering gigs, golf, fishing and cards. Craighurst and Horseshoe Valley were his stomping grounds for 30 years, along with the poker tables at Casino Rama, an especially favourite haunt. John is predeceased by his brother David, mother Betty and father Bill. His sister, Joan, would like to thank Dr. Beecroft (and Gail), Dr. Dawn Ng (and Kelly) and the Bayshore nurses (especially Mary Anne) for their support and kind words. A celebration of John’s life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 28 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Heights of Horseshoe Ski and Country Club, located on Horseshoe Valley Road five kilometres east of Craighurst (left at Birch Grove Drive). Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society will be accepted.
