MATTHEWS, Margaret Mary (Peggy), aged 90 of Victoria, BC, Canada passed away on Wednesday, April 4, 2018. Peggy was surrounded by her loving family, in the peace and comfort of her home, where she lived with her daughter Margaret and son-in-law Seamus for many years.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2018, at 1:00 pm, Ross Bay Cemetery, 1495 Fairfield Road (use Memorial Street for parking). Tea and Refreshments to follow at the home of Peggy’s son Pat and daughter-in-law Susan, at 1633 Pinewood Avenue in Fairfield.
Peggy was born on September 9, 1927 to Robert and Christina Carolan, Gormanston Village, County Meath, Éire. She married Patrick Joseph Matthews (of Navan, Co. Meath) on October 12, 1948. They lived in Navan until June 1957 when they emigrated to Victoria, BC, Canada with their 5 young children.
Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Peggy was also an avid and skilled golfer; winning many trophy’s and prizes over the years including Victoria City Ladies Champion (1970) and Gold Medalist in the 1978 BC Summer Games. She was always athletic and did well at any sport she put her hand to. She was an exceptional gardener; verdant, lush green lawns and hedges, flowers prolific and vegetables plentiful. Peggy loved all animals but most especially her little dogs. She always had at least one or two, and she spoiled them all rotten. She also had an impressive ‘charm’ of hummingbirds that she cared for every day. Some winter days she would have as many as 60 of the wee things clustered about her while she hung the feeders – and hang them every day she did.
Peggy is preceded in death by her husband Patrick J. Matthews (Aug 1986), her parents Robert and Christina Carolan, her brothers John and Robert, her sisters May, Christina, and Ester. She is survived by her five children and their spouses Robert (Darlene), Antoinette (Ted), Patrick (Susan), Brendan (Nancy) and Margaret (Seamus), her sister Anne Cassidy in Ireland, her grandchildren Patrick, Jannine, Simon, Katherine (Marcus), Kevin, Christine (Garth), Daniel (Lindsey), Caitlin, Andrew (Justine), Caroline, and Liam. Great grandchildren Claire, Margaret, Vivian, Aislinn, Clayton, Elena, and Quinn.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Peggy’s honour to the SPCA or World Wildlife Fund.
Peggy’s family wishes to extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to the nurses of the Palliative Response Team (Hospice PRT) for their care and kindness.
