Velma Mae (Koski)Mallette passed away on Sun. Oct.13, 2013 at St. Gabriel’s Villa Chelmsford. She was predeceased by her husband Alf Mallette (1981) & her parents Viljo (Bill) & Saima (Seppala) Koski. Velma was a loving and supportive mother and instilled in her children and grandchildren a great work ethic, a sense of right and wrong, an appreciation of the value of a dollar, and love of family. She set an example of how to live with style and grace and her tenacity and strength to get through the toughest times are a lesson for us all. She will be forever loved and missed by her children: Judi Buckingham Cook (Lenny) of Aurora Colorado; Jill Thomson (Barry predeceased) of Levack; and Dan and Angie Mallette of Barrie. She was a devoted and generous Grandma and G.G. to Jeff and Shay Buckingham, sons Aidan and Ryan (Parker Colorado); Kirk and Heather Thomson, daughters Maira and Darcy (Ottawa); Robyn Thomson and Oscar Cano, daughter Daniela (Copper Cliff), Shannon (Mallette) and Brian Fick, daughters Maddy and Elly (Sooke B.C.); and Kris & Susie Mallette, daughters Grace and Kaitlyn (Kelowna B.C.). She was predeceased by her brothers John, Bill, and Harry, and sisters Rusty MacNamara, Helen Sul, and Ethel Bullock. Auntie Velma was much loved by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews of the Koski & Mallette families.
Velma was a well known and respected resident of Levack for all of her 88 years. She worked at the Levack Pharmacy as a pharmacist assistant for 22 years before retiring in 1990. She was an accomplished knitter providing her children and grandchildren with beautiful sweaters, hats, and mittens. Velma was a fiercely independent and strong woman, maintaining her own home until 2012. Always stylish, she never left home without her hair done and makeup on. She enjoyed her daily walks and coffee at the Bluebird with the “girls”. Monday bus trips to the casino with Tynne and Barb were the highlight of her week and Lady Luck blessed her many times.
At her request there will be no visitation. A luncheon in her honour will be held on Sunday, November 3, from 11:30 – 2:30 at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 503 Onaping. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Cooperative Funeral Home, Chelmsford.
If you wish to honour Velma’s memory, donations to the Northern Cancer Foundation or the Onaping Falls & Cartier Food Bank will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you to the staff of Whitson Wing at St. Gabriel’s Villa for treating Velma with dignity and respect in her final months, Dr. W. Kealy and Dr. Pearce, and the Cooperative Funeral Home.
