MAHARAJ, Dr. Haricharan—

Dr. Hari Maharaj, a highly respected physician of 50 years, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2013 at St. Michael’s Hospital (Toronto) at 80 years of age.  Hari, born in Durban, South Africa on November 13, 1932, was a brilliant, dignified, passionate, determined, and principled man.  Beloved husband of Gonam (nee Naidoo) for 53 years.  Loving and cherished father of Ashwin, Piriam and Avinash, and his daughters-in-law, Neeta and Lisa, and son-in-law, Roland.  Loving grandfather of Deven, Laila, Anniq, Anil, and Benjamin.  He will also be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and family in Canada, South Africa, and elsewhere around the world.  Dr. Maharaj, or Dr.  Hari as he was known to his patients, was dearly loved by them and practiced family medicine in the Scarborough, Ontario community for more than 36 years.  He originally practiced in Dundee, South Africa for more than 12 years. A graduate of the University of Cape Town and fierce opponent of apartheid during his life in South Africa, Hari embraced Canada passionately and taught his children and all that would listen, how lucky we are to live in this wonderful Canadian nation.  He was happiest when he was surrounded by his family and friends, practicing medicine, and trading stocks.  He always had a good story to tell, he rarely lacked an opinion on any subject, and was forever, the protective patriarch of the Maharaj family.   A special thank-you to the staff members of the Intensive Care Unit, Department of Neurosurgery, at St. Michael’s Hospital and the Emergency Department of Scarborough General Hospital.  Visitation at The Mount Pleasant Visitation Centre (375 Mount Pleasant Road, East Gate Entrance) on Thursday, June 13th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and on Friday, June 14th from 11 a.m. until the time of Memorial in the Chapel at 12 noon.
