Died peacefully on Tuesday November 25, 2014 at Campbell House Hospice, Collingwood surrounded by her family in her 92nd year. Vi of Stayner, loving Wife of Allister MacDonald for almost 70 years. Wonderful Mother of Bruce (Susan MacDonald), Kay Broadhurst (Donald Munroe), David (Julie MacDonald) and Stuart (Natalie MacDonald). Treasured Grandmother of Craig, Mike, Scott, Matthew, Jessica, Jasmine, Colton, Brody, Melissa, and Bradley. Caring Sister of the late Eugenie Duff, the late Peter Kay and the late Nelly Peffers. Beloved Aunt of Genie Mathers, Heather Dakin and Jackie Roper.
Born in France, Violette grew up with her siblings Eugenie, Peter and Nelly in Edinburgh, Scotland. Like her father, a Regimental Sergeant, she joined the war effort as a member of the Women’s Land Army. A city girl thrust into the country, Violette spent her days feeding chickens and milking cows, proving (for not the first nor the last time) that she was a bright, resilient and adaptable woman.
It was in Edinburgh that she had a chance meeting that would change her life. Lost in the streets of the city, Allister asked Vi for directions, and the rest, as they say, was history. Allister and Vi were married on June 29, 1945, and she arrived in Toronto the following summer.
Vi made her home in Stayner, where she lived for 68 years. She served her community in many ways, including as the First Lady of Stayner, a Brownies troop leader, a mother, a grandmother, a sister and a friend. While working at the MacDonald’s 9-11, she never failed to greet her customers with a smile…not surprising to those who loved and knew her. She was loved by all her family, who will remember her for her wit, brevity, love, and (lest we forget) her no-nonsense attitude.
She had a wonderful sense of humour and never ending love, which was evident any time you came to her home. She was always there, inviting you to put your feet up, rest your head, or share a story. Her Scottish brogue will forever be remembered, forever present in the hearts and minds of those special to her.
Our dear Nana (and Mum) will be forever loved, always missed, and never forgotten.
Friends will be received at the Carruthers & Davidson Funeral Home – Stayner Chapel on Saturday November 29, 2014 from 2 to 4 p.m. A graveside ceremony will be held at Stayner Union Cemetery in the summer. If desired, remembrances to Campbell House Hospice, Collingwood or the charity of your choice would be appreciated by Vi’s family. To sign the Book of Memories, log on to www.carruthersdavidson.com
