It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mother Rose Lewis (Kohut) at Sumac Lodge on Sunday, August 12, 2012, at the age of 81.  Rose was born on November 23, 1930, to the late Jacob and Teklia Kohut in Wilkie, SK. Due to the drought in Saskatchewan, the Kohut family moved to bluewater Sarnia for a better opportunity in 1942. Rose was 12 when she arrived and was amazed with all the modern conveniences.  Upon mom’s arrival to Sarnia, her mother took her to downtown Sarnia, pointed across the river and said “Rosie, that is the United States of America.” Mom was in awe. Rose’s life was to take another big change when she met and married Roy Lewis on September 13, 1947. Then all the fun began – first James, Carol, Connie, Helen Datema (Rudy), Donna, Ken (Nancy Carpenter), Mark (Debbie), Tim (Lisa), Tammy Bueschleb (Stephen), and predeceased by an infant daughter Laura Lee (1955). Along with being a full-time mother, she worked 6 days a week as a waitress. Rose will be best remembered for her 20 plus years at the Hambone – everyone affectionately called her mom. Mom was the happiest when her dinner table was full of family and friends. She was never too busy to visit. Rose loved her family and right up until the end, had an incredible memory. Rose has 14 grandchildren: Roy, Shawn, Fred, Elizabeth, Ryan, Jimmy, Nick, Amanda, Kyle, Harrison, Shasta, Sherra, Jennifer, and Pam, as well as 15 great-grandchildren: Kristen, Jessica, Jordan, Evelyn, Gabby, Morgan, Josh, Jake, Julia, Cory, Jayden, Ayden and her last little angel, Olivia. She is also missed by many nieces and nephews. Rose was predeceased by her husband Roy (Nov. 2002), her siblings Fred (2005), Pauline Ryan (2005), Margaret Barber (2011), and Mike Kohut (2012). She is survived by her sister Mary Paquette (Leo) and brothers Yaris (Joy) and Bohdan (Marie). Rose spoke often and fondly of her roots in Saskatchewan. The Lewis family would like to give a heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Sumac Lodge for all the loving care they gave to mom and to our brother Jim for all the time he spent with mom. Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1576 London Line, Sarnia. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 16, 2012, at Smith Funeral Home. Interment to follow in Lakeview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Bluewater Health Maternal Infant Ward would be greatly appreciated (cheques only at the funeral home please). Memories and condolences may be sent online at
