LEWIS, Charles Douglas, of Strathroy, formerly of St. Thomas, passed away peacefully at his late residence, the Sprucedale Care Centre on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, at age 100.  Husband of the late Norien (nee VanKoughnett) Lewis, Doris (nee Shaw) Lewis, and Grace (Collier) Lewis.  Father of Donald Lewis (Elizabeth) of Toronto, and the late Shirley Avery, and grandfather of Gwen Davies (Allan), Wayne Avery (Julia), Sherri Avery (Sherry), John Avery (Jennifer), Amber Siple (Al), Charlie Avery (Anne), Scott Avery, Erica Lewis (David), Alison Lewis (Rob), and Amy Lewis (Shahen).  Also survived by numerous great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and nephews.  Doug was predeceased by two brothers, Edward and Ivan Lewis.  Born in St. Thomas, ON, June 18, 1912, he was the son of the late Charles and Hattie (nee Howarth) Lewis.  Doug first worked at his father’s plant, Elgin Handles, St. Thomas, then for nearly 35 years he worked on the railroad, initially for the New York Central, then for the Penn Central until his retirement in 1975.  Working for the railroad, he lived at various times in Windsor, Niagara Falls, St. Thomas, Fort Erie, and Waterford, but he always claimed St. Thomas was the best of them all.  The funeral service will be held at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160) on Monday, September 24th at 1:30 p.m., followed by interment in Elmdale Memorial Park.  Relatives and friends will be received by the family from 12:30 p.m. until service time.  Flowers gratefully declined.  If so desired, memorial donations to the charity of one’s choice will be appreciated.
