CROWE : MARSHALL B.A., L.L.B., L.S.M. (of Portland on the Rideau)

Marshall Crowe

MARSHALL ALEXANDER CROWE B.A., LL.B., L.S.M.

April 14, 1921 – August 16, 2013

Son of William Johnston Crowe and Georgina Gertrude (née Gammon). Predeceased by Doris Mary (née Scanes), beloved wife of 61 years, his classmate at United College and energetic and devoted collaborator. Marshall and Doris were predeceased by their infant son William. Also predeceased by his parents and siblings, Gertrude Cochrane, Elliott, Ruth, Georgina , Florence Christiansen, John and Harry. Marshall was born on his parents’ farm near Rossburn, Manitoba and died of congestive heart failure at his own farm near Portland, Ontario with his family around him. He is survived by his dear friend, Glenna Roberts and his and Doris’ children, Tom, (Allison Shaw), Alison, Helen (David Pollard), Sheila (Brian Fukuzawa) and Abigail (Ron Sly, also deceased). His grandchildren: Jessica (Taro Murata), Caleb Yong (Juliana Ramirez-Herrera), Susan Crowe (Radek Zlamal) , David Berry (Samantha Robdrup), Catherine Crowe, Adam Berry and Ben Fukuzawa. His great-grandchildren: Jadyn and Isabelle Berry, Charlie and Lily Murata and Caroline Zlamal.

Over the years, our parents opened their hearts and home to new Canadians whom we are proud to call family: Lawrence Le (Ping), Nick Ho (Irene), and Seumien Chen (Nobuo Sasaki) and their children and grandchildren:  Innie Chen (Jordan Melzer and their son Emet), Yuli Chen-Sasaki, Jonathan and Rebecca Le, Ariana and Ashlyn Ho . Marshall attended Daniel McIntyre Collegiate in Winnipeg, obtained a B.A. in history and economics at United College, Winnipeg and an LL.B. at the University of Ottawa. He served in the Canadian Army during WW II and after the war as a Foreign Service Officer, Department of External Affairs, including postings to New York (United Nations) and Moscow in the 40’s and 50’s. He resigned from the Foreign Service in 1961 and worked as the Economic Advisor, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. He returned to Ottawa in 1967 as Deputy Secretary to the Federal Cabinet, serving Prime Ministers Lester B. Pearson and Pierre Elliott Trudeau. He was later President and Chairman, Canada Development Corporation; Chairman, National Energy Board; President, M.A. Crowe Consultants; Director, Gulf-Mark Offshore; Counsel to Johnston and Buchan LLP and to Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP and a Bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada. Marshall had many mentors in his career. He and Doris were both students of Arthur R.M. Lower and Arthur Phelps at United College. Marshall was guided as a junior Foreign Service Officer by John Watkins and John Holmes. He never forgot his debt to these men and to the many colleagues and friends he was privileged to know over his life and career.

Marshall and Doris raised cattle at the farm in Portland, partnering with good friends, Larratt and Paddy Higgins, Ross and Marion Stone and Eric Lawlor and were among a group of breeders who introduced the Dexter breed to Canada. They were also active in the beginning years of the Toronto French School; Marshall served on the Board of Directors and Doris helped to establish the first TFS school library. No words can adequately express our gratitude to the many wonderful caregivers, who supported Marshall and family. Thank-you Gloria, Susan, Penny, Faith, Linda, Kelly, Sheila, Elaine, Cyndal and Steven. Your gentle kindness, compassion and professionalism made it possible for us to keep Marshall at home, safe and comfortable and correcting our grammar until the end. We would like to express a special thanks to Susan Blue, for her kindness and devotion to both our parents over more than 20 years. Finally, we owe a great debt to the many physicians who assisted Marshall, including Dr. Susan Wilkinson and Dr. Kathy Wickens.
