Surrounded by the love of his family, Edwin (Ed) William Johnson passed away peacefully on Friday, January 31, 2014 at the age of 64. He was the loving and supportive husband of Susanne (nee Hale) for 42 years. Proud father of Amy Hawkes and her husband David of Sarnia and Jennifer Dacosta and her husband Ashley of Sault Ste. Marie. Loving grandfather of Jordan, Sarah, and Nathan Hawkes and Matthew and Aiden Dacosta. Dear brother of Joanne (Jay) Cantor and Michael (Joanne) Johnson. Son in-law of Bill (Merv) Hale and brother in-law of Allan (Patty) Hale. Predeceased by his parents Harold and Elvie Johnson and mother in-law Boots Hale. Ed was a long-time employee of Steeplejack Services, Sarnia as a mechanic and service manager before retiring in 2009. His passion for all things mechanical came through in his work. He carried this interest into restoring fixing and enjoying all aspects of cars. He spent many hours watching car races. He enjoyed the solitude and wonder of the outdoors through hunting, fishing, boating and conservation, passions that he passed on to his children and grandchildren. It was his dream to spend his retirement at his property in Desbarats, ON. The property has been the source of many great memories and with the help of many hands, Sue and Ed have built a cottage that will continue to be a legacy that the family will enjoy. Ed spent many hours giving back to his community. Whatever needed to be done at Camlachie United Church and Lamrecton Camp, Ed was there to help. Our thanks to Doctors Schlebusch and Maddison for their exceptional care and to all the nurses of the Palliative Care unit at Bluewater Health who cared for Ed with such respect and compassion. Throughout his illness, Ed handled the obstacles that he faced with faith, acceptance and humour. Ed was an outstanding example of strength and courage during a difficult journey. Although we would have liked more time with Ed, we give thanks for a life lived with integrity, gentleness, and a loving spirit. As per Ed’s request, his body has been donated for scientific research. Family and friends will be received at Smith Funeral Home 1576 London Line, Sarnia on Tuesday, February 4th , 2014 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
