John Joseph Payne of Camlachie

Suddenly on Wednesday, February 22, 2012, John Joseph Payne passed away at the age of 90.  Loving husband for 50 years of Gerry (Zink) and kind father of Mary Liz (Meng Chen), Jack (Jennifer So), Danny, and Brigid (Ken Eliuk).  Proud grandfather of Meghan, Brandon, Alannah, Joseph, Anje and John.  Brother of Christine (Sister Aloysia, OSJ), Ann (Sister Brigid Ann, OSJ), Patricia (Hammond) and Josephine Payne.  Dearly loved by many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.  Predeceased by parents John and Brigid (Stanley), sisters Mary (Sister Mary Lawrence, OSJ), Helen (McMahon) and Theresa (Marcello).  John was born in St. Catharines and graduated from the University of Western Ontario (through Assumption College, Windsor) and the University of Detroit in Engineering.  He worked for many years as a mechanical engineer in Windsor and London, and served on the engineering society (ASHRAE) as president and historian. After retiring, he was active in St. Michael’s Parish, Bright’s Grove. Special thanks to countless parishioners, neighbours, friends and Red Cross Caregivers Diane and Cheryl, who made it possible for John to live a full and happy life right to the end, to Dr. Buckton for his years of care, Fathers Peter Keller and Antony Kolenchery and Deacon Dave Robertson of St. Michael’s Parish for their concern and support, the Bright’s Grove emergency responders- ambulance, fire department and police- and the emergency department at Bluewater Health Care Centre for their efficiency, courtesy and compassion. Family and friends will be received on Friday, February 24, 2012, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, with prayers being offered at 8:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2012, at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, 1920 Wildwood Ave., Bright’s Grove, with visitation one hour prior at the church. Interment in St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Chatham. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to the Canadian Red Cross or Covenant House (cheques only at the funeral home please).
