Joan Sullivan appreciated the meaning of responsible citizenship. While a wife, mother and worker, she was engaged in her community as a volunteer, activist and humanitarian. She was once senior legal secretary to the City Solicitor at a time when married women with children were not permitted to hold such positions in the public service beyond the “acting“ period of the occupancy, She later served as office manager for the firm of Hochberg Sloppen, during which time she organized for the certification of a union for legal secretaries. She concluded her career as an instructor at St. Clair College. In her retirement, with her husband Tom, she was an active volunteer in the unincorporated community of Tilden Lake and a proud fund raiser for the Canadian Cancer Society. She was predeceased by her beloved granddaughter, Tricia, and by her dear daughter Ruth (Mathews). She is survived by several grandchildren both biological and adopted. In lieu of flowers or other gifts of remembrance, the family recommends a donation to the Cancer Society or other charity of your choice.
