INTVEN: Johanna Francesca (Joan) (née Somers) of St. Thomas
Johanna Francesca (Joan) Intven (née Somers) passed away peacefully on Friday, January 9, 2015 in her ninety-fifth year surrounded by her loving family. Joan was the devoted wife of William (Bill) Intven (1920-2002). She was a loving mother to Hank Intven (Lyndsay Green, children: Lauren and Andrea (Zach Zubrick), Mike Intven (Margaret Intven, children: Katherine (Dave Tyndall), Natalie and Luke), Mary Intven-Wallace (children: Will Wallace (Shannon Butcher), Jessica Wallace (Jamie Ware), Dr. Rebecca Wallace (Fede Carvajal), Nick Wallace, Liz Kristiansen (John Kristiansen, children: Mellissa (Adam Young) and Julia), Tom Intven (Laurie Intven, children: Kate (Mike Holt), Megan (Nathan McIntyre), Erin (Jordan McCloskey), and Tess, Margaret Intven-Mercredi (son: John Mercredi), and Pauline Intven-Casier (Ron Casier, children: Remi, Victoria, Karel, Hanna (deceased) and Mina (deceased). She was the proud great-grandmother of Merryn, Alexis, Charlotte, Beatrice, Jasmine, Mateo, Adelaide, Mirabel, Jove and Miles. Joan outlived the rest of her generation, including her brothers and sisters in the Netherlands. Joan was born in Veldhoven, The Netherlands on September 24, 1920. After marrying Bill in 1947 the couple emigrated to Canada in 1950. She worked closely with Bill to realize his dream of starting a plant nursery, founding Canadale Nurseries Ltd. in 1955 She worked tirelessly to ensure Canadale would become a successful and important part of the St. Thomas business community, and she instilled a strong work ethic in her family and those who worked with her. Joan was the matriarch of her family, whom she loved and supported unconditionally. She was kind, generous and cheerful every day of her life. Joan gave generously to many organizations in the St. Thomas and Elgin community and was a dedicated member of St. Anne’s parish and the Catholic Women’s League. Special thanks to Dr. Jeff Balsdon, Dr. Lum and the compassionate nurses on the second and fifth floors of the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital, CCAC and Joan’s many caregivers, Father Rick Dales and Sister Mary Boere for their long friendship and guidance. Joan will be sorely missed but never forgotten by her large family and the St. Thomas community.
Visitation at Williams Funeral Home in St. Thomas on Monday, January 12th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. A funeral mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anne’s Church, 20 Morrison Drive, St. Thomas at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 13th. Interment to follow in Holy Angels’ Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital Foundation or St. Thomas Caring Cupboard.
