Joyce Hoffman CroppedDied peacefully on Monday, August 11th, 2014, at the age of 90 with her husband Terry by her side.  Terry and Joyce were married for almost 60 years.  She is loved and will be missed by her four children, David, Eric and Tom Hoffman and Jane Virro, their spouses Nicola, Echo, Helen and Mike, and 8 grandchildren Lily, Jason, Frances, Jamie, Sonya, Kristina, Jennifer and David. Joyce was born in Weyburn, Manitoba in 1924.  She grew up in Ottawa and loved her cottage life in the Gatineau where her father built their cabin in 1938.  She received her honours BA degree in English and German from Queen’s University in 1946.  She taught German in Winnipeg and worked for the Ministry of Defense Research Board prior to starting her Masters program.  She was one of the first Canadians post-war to be awarded a scholarship to attend Bonn University in Germany in 1951.  She then achieved her Masters degree in German from Bryn Mawr in 1953. In her later years, Joyce received several awards from the Province of Ontario for years of her volunteer work.Terry and Joyce met in 1953 at The Royal Military College where Joyce was translating war documents and Terry was working as a lecturer and student working toward his Masters degree. Joyce had an appetite for learning, was a voracious reader, enjoyed hiking, cross country and downhill skiing, and generally being outdoors. Joyce would spend the next five decades of her life enjoying time with her family and grandchildren.  Perhaps Joyce’s greatest attribute was a concern for others and her family.  She always put others before herself.  Joyce lived life to the fullest, leaving each of us with a special place in our hearts where her spirit will live forever. A memorial service will be held at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at 11:00 am, with family and friends being received one hour prior to service.
