HarrisJamesHarris, James B., passed away in his 79th year at Hospice Simcoe in Barrie on July 9, 2014. He is survived by his two children, Gordon (Cathy) Harris and Sandra (Chad) Ballantyne, and their mother Marian Harris, along with five grandchildren, Matthew and Meghan Harris, and Connory, Caedda, and Keelan Ballantyne. He is also survived by his brother, Edwin Harris, as well as his sisters Zella Bonin, Arlene Hallas, and Lorie Valovich. He will also be missed by good friend and “fishing buddy” Linda Hodgkinson. Jim was born on October 21, 1936 in Beamsville, Ontario, the second of five children. He was a very energetic and adventuresome child and became an excellent athlete as a teenager. When he moved to Barrie in 1955 he became active in softball, bowling and began a scuba diving club. His love of sports led him to form Barrie Sports (on Collier Street) and two ski shops, one at Horseshoe Valley Ski Club, the second at what was then known as Medonte Mountain Ski Club. In 1973 he changed careers and went on to become a well-known real estate agent in the city for 21 years. Jim’s favourite pursuits were hiking, camping, fishing and hunting. In his early years in Barrie he became vice-president of the Barrie and District Conservation Club. Several times he fought to stop housing development of key green spaces in the city. He was instrumental in the formation of Sunnidale Park and the preservation of the Minesing Wetlands. Special thanks to the many, many people who have cared for Jim over the last few years, for their time and patience: Linda Hodgkinson, Dr. Levine, Dr. Rob Lea, Dr. Lalor, the RVH staff in Emerg and 3 GC, CCAC, ILS and Bayshore, and Hospice Simcoe (especially Yola). Friends may call at ADAMS FUNERAL HOME (445 St. Vincent Street, Barrie) on Saturday, July 19, 2014 from 11a.m. until the time of Memorial Service in the Chapel at noon. A reception will follow. Memorial donations to Hospice Simcoe would be appreciated by the family. Messages of condolence may be forwarded through adamsfuneralhome.ca
