SHIELDS: Robert William of North York

Posted by on July 30, 2015

images-4Robert William Shields, husband, father, bon vivant, and inventor, died Monday of pneumonia. He was 87.

It was the general opinion of those who knew Robert that he was charming and brilliant… in that order. A lethal combination that was one part Dean Martin and one part Frank Sinatra. A gravitational pull that would give you pause upon being introduced…chills mid story and cause for reflection days later.

He was unique. Not the kind of unique that is a common code word for strange, but rather the real kind of unique. The “Get-out-of-my-way-I’m-going-to-build-a-boat” kind of unique. His heart was not on his sleeve. As a matter of fact, he rarely carried it with him. Not because he wasn’t kind or loving, but because it was the big gun that he only brought out when absolutely necessary. Twenty years ago he found it necessary. The result was a thirty-foot glowing “Bah Humbug” sign hung over his balcony, nineteen stories over North York.

He taught his children to swing hammers, throw footballs, shift gears and, most importantly, to never be afraid of what’s in front of you. On the morning of July 20th, 2015, surrounded by loved-ones and suffering from pneumonia, he said “I’m going to die now”. And he did just that.

He is survived by his wife Sylvia Gangursky, Brenda Godier, four children, eight grandchildren, a great-grandchild, several great nieces and nephews and even a few great great nephews. A private gathering of immediate family will be held in the coming days.

Oh, and when he sharpened knives in the kitchen, it was a spectator sport.
