Doug photoDoug Gunby, of Burlington, died March 27, 2016 at age 65. He was the son of the late Leslie and Evyln Gunby. Doug is survived by his wife of 35 years, Joanne (Ryder). He is fondly remembered by brother Clare Gunby and sister Betty Dyment and their families. Doug was a graduate of the University of Waterloo and spent his working life in the IT department of Bonar Packaging in Burlington. After early retirement, he kept busy doing carpentry and home renovation projects for his friends. He was a long-time member of Flamborough Hills Golf Club. Loving husband, father, grandfather and provider, Jim was a dedicated Roman Catholic and an outstanding citizen.  Jim leaves behind his wife Jean, and their six children, Marie, Patricia, Jim, Catharine, Michael and Daniel: two PhD’s, two MA’s, mechanic and millwright and company owner and long-time operator of a family business.  Jim also took great joy in his ten grandchildren: John, Neil, Alison, Jimmy, Andrew, Kelsey, Mark, Natalie, Kevin, and Gwenyth, and great-grandchild, McCarthy.  Jim was always active in his church.  He was an altar server until he was 21 years of age.  An active and long-time member of the Knights of Columbus, Jim served as Grand Knight of the Dundas Council and then as Charter Grand Knight for the Father Vernon H. Culliton Council in Waterdown which achieved Star Council award each year under his tenure.  Jim served two years as District #83 Deputy and in that capacity coordinated a cancer research funding drive with the Masonic Lodge.  He and his wife, Jean, represented Southern Ontario at the 1986 Knights of Columbus Convention in Minnesota.  Jim served on the St. Thomas School Board in the 1960’s and 1970’s.  Later, in the 1990’s, Jim served on the St. Thomas Church Building Committee.  He was pleased to see the new church building completed in 2004.  Jim found much inspiration as a Minister of Communion and coordinated worship ministries for many years under four succeeding priests in Waterdown.  He served as a manager of a Hamilton company and later he was the sales manager and president of a small construction company.  Jim strongly believed in, and embodied, the Golden Rule – do unto others as you would have them do unto you. images-4With sadness and sorrow in our hearts, Matt suddenly passed away in Cabo Mexico on September 17, 2015 in his loving girlfriends arms. Cremation was held in Mexico wishes of his family from Poland and Celebration of Matt’s life, followed by the blessing of Matts Ashes at Markey-Dermody Funeral Home in Hamilton on September 26, 2015. Matt had bigger than life personality, infectious laugh, he was loved my many. Matt leaves behind his Mother in Poland, two sisters, daughters and grandchildren. He also leaves his girlfriend in Stoney Creek, his friends. Matts resting place is in Poland. He is missed and loved and will never be forgotten. Rest in peace until we meet again. We love you.

james berdan 002PoppyBERDAN, James A., of Chartwell Willowgrove Long Term Care, Ancaster, ON, formerly of St. Thomas and Aylmer, passed away peacefully at his residence on Friday, February 19, 2016, in his 94th year.  Beloved husband for 66 years to the late Roberta “Bobbie” (nee Staniforth) Berdan (2011).  Dearly loved father of Syndra McDougall (David) of Black Bay, ON, Karen Pearce (Will) of Lumby, BC, and Teresa Langlois (Jim) of Hamilton, ON.  Dear brother of Edith Allen (late Oliver) of St. Thomas, and the late Verna Jennings (late Wray).  Also survived by 8 grandchildren, Corie, Chris, Lara, Sarah, Nicole, Jason, Michael and Jamie, 24 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, as well as several nieces and nephews.  Born in Kitchener, ON, December 15, 1922, he was the son of the late Vernas and Dorothy (nee Stringer) Berdan.  James was a retired CNR general yard master.  During the Second World War, he served overseas with the RCAF.  James was a former member of the RCAF Association #427, London, and Lord Elgin Branch #41, Royal Canadian Legion, St. Thomas.  A private family celebration of his life was held at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160) on Monday, February 22nd, followed by cremation.  Private inurnment in Elmdale Memorial Park.  Memorial donations to the charity of one’s choice will be gratefully acknowledged. (nee Clatworthy) Knowles (2012).  Dearly loved father of Carol Knowles of St. Thomas, Linda Baker of Hamilton, Nancy Davidson, Barbara Glazier (Kevin), and Mary Pfeffer (John), all of St. Thomas.  Dear brother of Gladys Tisdale of St. Thomas, Jean Church of Simcoe, late William J. Knowles, late Clark Knowles, late Thomas Knowles, late Ralph Knowles (Rose of Tillsonburg), and the late Ray Knowles (Joan of Niagara Falls, NY).  Also survived by 10 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  Born in South Dorchester Twp., ON, August 15, 1922, he was the son of the late Clarence and Beatrice (nee Derrough) Knowles.  Gordon formerly worked as a welder for Fleet Aircraft, Fort Erie, as an insurance agent, a car salesman for Merlin & Spackman Motors, St. Thomas, as a kiln worker at Canada Vitrified Products, St. Thomas, and later took up farming.  During the Second World War, he served with the RCAF.  Gordon was a member of New Sarum Baptist Church.  Relatives and friends will be received by the family at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160) on Wednesday, Feb. 24th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and on Thursday, Feb. 25th from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.  A private family service to follow.  Interment in Orwell Cemetery.  Memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society or New Sarum Baptist Church will be gratefully acknowledged.

shepleyDied suddenly on Tuesday February 16, 2016 at Southlake Regional Health Centre, Newmarket in her 81st year. Anne Marie of Wasaga Beach, beloved wife of Chuck for over 50 years. Loving mother of Susan (Brian Baird), Karen Shepley (David Beechey) and Brenda (Tim Connelly). Cherished grandmother of Lauren and Stephen Baird, Katlyn and Lyndzy O’Hearn and Elizabeth, Curtis and Rebecca Connelly. Predeceased by her parents Margaret (Childs) and William McLellan. Dear sister of John (Fran)McLellan, Bill (late Peggy) McLellan and Alf (Susan) McLellan. She will also be missed by her many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Anne Marie was a woman of faith and compassion. She had a long career as a registered nurse, was a long time member of the Catholic Women’s league and in retirement was very active with the Sunbird Probus Club, the Red Hats and was a former singer with the Georgian Girls. She will be deeply missed. 307_nusink_nelliePetronella Theodora “Nellie” Nusink of R. R. #1 Holyrood passed away at Wingham & District Hospital on Sunday, February 7th, 2016 in her 84th year.

Nellie was born in Arnhem, Netherlands on November 27, 1932 to the late Jacobus and Petronella Velthuizen.

Beloved wife of the late Bernardus “Ben” Nusink who predeceased her in September 2013.

Dear mother of Juliette Kunz and her husband Peter of Mount Elgin, Richard Nusink and his wife Magda of Toronto and David Nusink and his wife Helen of Ajax.

Missed by her grandchildren Robert Barker (Valerie), Kevin Barker, Francis Nusink and Beatrice Nusink and great-grandchildren Sierra Wilkinson and Skyla Locke.

Nellie was a talented quilter and fabric artist and an avid gardener.

Visitation will be held at the Tiffin Funeral Home, Teeswater on Saturday, February 20th, 2016 from 2-4 p.m. Following Nellie’s wishes, there will be no funeral service.

Cremation has taken place.

Memorial donations to the Wingham & District Hospital Foundation or Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.

BROWNELL: Margaret A. of St. Thomas, Ont.

Margaret BrownellBROWNELL – Margaret of St. Thomas, Ontario passed away peacefully at Valleyview Home on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at the age of 94. Beloved wife of the late Delbert Brownell.  Margaret is survived by children Dianne Jones (Ray) and Ron Brownell (Bette); grandchildren Ronda Bartha (Ken), Michelle Sherwin (Steve), Scott Jones, Lesley McLellan (Dan); great grandchildren Rilee Steckler (Jordan), Megan White (Roman), Logan Bartha (fiancée Alexa), Spencer Bartha, Allie McLellan, Katelyn McLellan, Grant McLellan and great-great grandson Eli Steckler. Also survived by sister Joyce Hibbs of Ajax Ontario and nieces and nephews Rick, Brad, Bruce, Lee, Kim, Greg, Ken and Krista across Ontario.

Marg was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She donated her time to helping others understand the Bible.

She loved her family and often organized surprise days for her children and grandchildren where she would decorate the rec room and shower them with little gifts, just for nothing.  One year as a special surprise for everyone she bought us all sweatshirts for the cottage with our names embroidered on them along with the name of the town where our family cottage is…Haliburton.

Marg was very generous, once opening her home to a friend who was homeless due to a fire in the Chestnut Street Apartments.  She had a wacky sense of humour. For example, she once bought a pig’s head in a market in Windsor, then invited everyone for dinner and had a big unveiling with the dining room table all decorated in a fancy way. There was the pig head with apple in the mouth, and a plastic horsefly on the snout.

Marg came from a musical family and played piano by ear from the age of five. Her father accompanied her on the violin and her mother and sister Joyce sang. Karaoke might be popular today, but back in the fifties she actually cut a record with Decca records. Mom played the piano at the Golden Slipper, a dance hall in Haliburton. In later years, she overcame a struggle with anxiety and depression to volunteer at retirement homes in the area, where she led singsongs of all the old favourites with the residents.

Mom was a great cook. When we were kids, we were dirt poor. She could turn a can of Prem into a gourmet roast.  She also made the best beef stew, a real comfort food.   One of Mom’s favourite things to do was bake.  The family remembers her flaky pastry as the base of her delicious Maid of Honour tarts.   Oddly enough, Mom didn’t like making cookies but she was the star of pies and squares.   The champion dessert was the four layer chocolate cake with whipped cream filling.  Kids coming by for a visit with their parents loved the ice cream sandwiches rolled in sprinkles or chocolate chips.  It was a sad day when everyone started watching their weight and sugar count….the baking took a sharp decline!

Another talent Mom pursued was knitting…delicate baby sweater sets, then afghans, and scarves of all colours.

She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.  We wish to publicly acknowledge the superior care she received at CP Place in Valleyview over a four year period. We consider the staff to be angels delivering compassionate care that we could no longer provide.

FREEMAN (Voteary), Cora Evelyn Mae of Cobourg, Ontario

Freeman Cora Feb 11With family at her side, Cora (nee Anglin) died peacefully on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Streamway Villa, Cobourg at the age of 95. She was the cherished wife of the late Leslie Freeman and the late Arthur Voteary.  She was dearly loved by her daughters and their families: Mary Anne Voteary; Shirley and John Gilham, and children Todd and Denise (Sophie, Abrielle), Leanne and Andrew Daniels (Kayleigh, Lochlan); Marilyn and Michael Matthews, and children, Rachel and Matthew Belton (Matthew Hockley); Stephen and Amberley Hockley (Ella); Elizabeth Hockley and Vash Sant; Sharon and Peter Van Essen, and children Daniel and Jenica (Elliot, Arie), Rebecca and Ryan Gaytan (Adan, Katherine). Cora was the youngest born to Edward and Hannah Anglin.  She is predeceased by all her siblings and their spouses: Essie and Robert Boston, Fletcher Anglin, Olive and Barclay Warren, John Anglin, Myrtle and Jim Woodland, Ruby and Arnold Phillips, Walter and Minerva Anglin. Cora loved and was loved by many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends as well as the Voteary and Freeman families.

Cora alongside her husband, Arthur, made a great team as together they pastored churches in Metcalf, Belfast, Ireland, Watertown, New York, Shawville, Quebec, Hamilton, Odessa, Uxbridge and Frankford. Cora had often said there were many wonderful people in everyplace they had lived. She also enjoyed and made many great friends when she lived in Belleville.

Visitation will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King Street East, Cobourg, Ontario on Monday, February 15 from 12 noon – 2 p.m. Funeral Service will take place in the Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m.  Reception to follow.  Private interment will take place in Battersea.  Those wishing may make donations to the Free Methodist Church in Canada – Global Missions or a charity of your choosing. SCHULENBERG: “Willy” Willem Frans of Beamsville, ON

W Schulenberg obitStrong in faith and firm in the Lord’s promises, Willy was called home to the Lord at the age of 70 on Monday evening, February 8, 2016. Surrounding him was his beloved bride of 44 years, Lydia (nee Bruinsma) and loving children, Marty and Lorna, Cherie and Pete Buikema, Jamie and Michelle, and Joni and Chris Karol. Dear grandpa of 14 grandchildren. Dear brother and brother-in-law of the late John and Rita, the late Jeltje, Jellie and the late Tjalle, the late John, the late Evert and Theresa, Ernie and Jane, Diane and Eddy VanMeeteren, Hank and Fiona Bruinsma, and Stewart and Debbie Bruinsma. Willy will also be missed by Uncle Bill and Aunt Gerda VanDyk, as well as many other relatives and friends. With a quiet demeanour that proved to be tenacious, he walked a road with cancer for two years. By the grace of God, he set an example of patience in the face of suffering. In life he was a faithful anchor to his free-spirited wife, and supportive of his children and grandchildren, readily lending a hand in their lives and homes. He was able to express his love of music and his joy in the faith most beautifully as a church organist. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Friends may visit with the family at VINEYARD CANADIAN REFORMED CHURCH, 4628 John Street, Beamsville on Thursday from 2-4 and 6:30-9 p.m. where the Funeral Service will be held on Friday, February 12, 2016 at 10 a.m., Rev.
