Gaspirc, Ciril passed away peacefully on March 30th, 2013, at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital with his children and grandchildren by his side. He was 91 years old. Ciril, who was the youngest of 12 children, was born March 17th, 1922, in Cerklje, Slovenia to Franz and Franciska Gaspirc. Before emigrating to Canada in 1948, Ciril was a cheese maker in Austria. Once in St. Thomas, he met Marina Langerholc of Skofja Loka, Slovenia at George Thorman’s English classes and married her in 1950. Ciril and Marina stayed in St. Thomas where they built their home and planted an orchard and vegetable garden, and raised their children. Ciril worked as an auto body mechanic at Spackman’s and Fearn Ford until he retired. Ciril was known for his home made kielbasa, cider and slivovka which became favourites at family gatherings. Ciril was a founding member of the Slovenian Cultural Club, Triglav, where summer picnics, dances and Christmas celebrations were shared for many years with children and grandchildren. Dearly loved husband of 54 years of the late Marina Gaspirc (2004) and beloved father of Margaret Rush (husband Vince), Bob Gaspirc (wife Eileen), and Susan Andrews (husband Richard). Loving grandfather of Jessamy (Anthony) and Megan (Danny) Rush of Australia, Michael, Colleen (Taylor) and Anthony (wife Suria) Gaspirc of Toronto, Katie (husband Mark), Gregory (Kylie), Jessica (Jon) and Keegan (Jessica) of St. Thomas. Proud great-grandfather of Van and Will McVeigh, Marley and Rowan Gaspirc, and Safiya and Ayub Gaspirc. He will be remembered by his nieces and nephews, from Slovenia and the United States. The family wishes to thanks the CCAC Personal Support Workers and especially the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital CCC D-Wing Nurses for their compassionate care.
Visitation will take place at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin St., St. Thomas on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anne’s Church, 20 Morrison Dr., St. Thomas on Friday at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Holy Angels’ Cemetery. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Red Cross.
