Franke, Helena Gertrud (née Bendig) 89, of Ottawa Ontario, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2017. Helena was born in East Prussia (Ostpreußen) on June 4 1928.
Helena is survived by her son Norbert Georg Franke. Her husband Karl Heinz Franke (1967), her son’s Eric Kurt Franke (1998) and Mark Gregory Franke(2014) precede her in death. She is survived by her sisters Ruth Kavanaugh, Hannelore Parsons, Irmgard Habner and Eva Zahn. She (Tante Leni, Oma) is survived by her many nieces and nephews and her grandson Amos by Eric Kurt Franke/Sonya Franke.
Helena, from her childhood years in pre-WW2 Germany, through her teen years in war torn Europe and her emigration as a young adult from post-WW2 West Germany to Canada, has been a life of hardship, loss, joy, happiness, tragedy and debilitation due to Alzheimer’s in her latter years of life. Throughout her life, her dedication to, and love for family is that which defined her foremost and it is these attributes which gave her strength and fortitude to overcome these hurdles and to continue on.
In spite of losing her husband and two sons, she endured. After the untimely loss of her husband she was tasked with raising her three sons and did so without looking back. Her love for her sons was unwavering and steadfast and a true testament to what motherhood means. In good times and hard times raising her sons, she was a safe harbor from the storm.
Whether it was endeavoring to re-unite her parents, sisters and brother after the war or living her belief that the most important facet of life is family, she believed and lived her life to these truths. She helped wherever help was needed and would do so without hesitation.
God bless her soul and may she find peace in His house of many mansions.
