After a valiant battle Herb completed his final marathon, passing peacefully on October 9th, 2012 with his family present at his side and in spirit. Pre-deceased by his wife Heather and brother Fred. Loving father to Sherril (Mike), Penny (Will), Kim (Phil) and Montie (Susan) and proud grandfather of Christopher, Amber, Alex, Curtis and Jack. Herb is survived by his sister Maureen, brother-in-law Bent Kaastrup, brother Brian Gordon, sister-in-law Eunice and sister-in-law Bev Foxwell, along with many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.  Born in Chauvin, Alberta on October 3, 1933, Herb joined the RCAF and proudly served his country from 1951 to 1986. Herb rose through the ranks to Chief Warrant Officer before receiving his commission and a promotion to the rank of Captain. Herb loved woodworking and was an avid sportsman. He excelled at golf and curling but took up running later in life and, at the age of 52, achieved qualifying times for the Boston Marathon with his personal best of 3:17. At the birth of his first grandchild he proclaimed that they would be the first grandparent-grandchild to run a marathon. In the last months of his life, Herb found peace and solace from the church and formed a strong friendship with Pastor Keith (Bridlewood Community Church of the Nazarene) to whom the family is deeply grateful for his compassion and caring. During his final year, Herb resided at Granite Ridge in Stittsville where he was extended loving and considerate care by all of the staff for which the family expresses its heartfelt thanks and appreciation. Friends are invited to visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue (at Richmond) on Thursday, October 11 from 7 to 9pm. A Celebration of Herb’s Life will be held at Bridlewood Community Church of the Nazarene, 2 Stonehaven Drive, Kanata on Friday, October 12 at 11am. In Memoriam donations may be made to the Arthritis Society of Canada or to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada. A Memorial Service will be held in Alberta at a later date.
