It is with deeply saddened hearts that the family of Dr. Fernando announces his passing on Wednesday, January 7, 2015, at Bluewater Health.
Dr. Fernando was born, raised and educated in Ceylon, now called Sri Lanka. He had his primary education at Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa in Sri Lanka. He had his Medical Education at the University of Ceylon and in 1952, graduated from that institution with the degree M.B.B.S. He served his internship as a Junior Medical Officer at the Government General Hospital at Galle in Sri Lanka. Following his internship, he served in Sri Lanka for a short period, and in 1958, moved to the United Kingdom for Postgraduate training. In 1959, he married his longtime sweetheart, Miss Razeena Sallay at Bangor in North Wales. In 1963, following his training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at various hospitals in the UK, he passed his F.R.C.S. (Edin) and M.R.C.O.G. (Gr.Bt.). In 1964, he and his wife immigrated to Canada, and shortly afterwards, became Canadian Citizens. In 1970, he passed the F.R.C.S. (Canada) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. In Canada, he served as a consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Regina, Saskatchewan, Edmonton, Alberta, and Victoria, British Columbia. He retired from practice in 1990 and moved to Southern Ontario with his wife to be near their only daughter Aruna.
He is survived by his loving wife Razeena, only daughter Aruna, son-in-law Dale, grandson David, and granddaughter April, as well as many nieces and nephews in Sri Lanka. Cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, sympathy may be expressed through donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Diabetes Association, or the Sarnia & District Humane Society.
