With deep sadness but peaceful hearts we said goodbye to our wonderful Mother and Grandmother on Friday, November 7, 2014. Mom passed away quietly in her own home in her 92nd year, surrounded by the love of her family and her faithful dog Ned. Beloved wife of the late James (Jim) Fargher (1990). Loving mother and mother-in-law of Dr. Jay and Carol Fargher, and Janis and D’Arcy Bell. Proud and adored Grandma to Ryan (Lila) and Graham Bell, and Christie (Heinrich) and Brendan Fargher. Predeceased by her family Margaret (sister) and Harry Mason, William (brother) and Genevieve Mathoney, Jack Mathoney (brother), and Eunice (sister-in-law) and Herb Norwood. Survived by sisters-in-law Joyce (Dick) Turner and Penny Mathoney, and several special nieces and nephews. Widowed at 67, Mom was blessed with many dear faithful friends and neighbours, many of whom are now deceased. As a young girl growing up in Windsor, Mom was a very talented pianist, dancer and gymnast. Before marrying Dad and moving to Sarnia, Mom held a management position with Henry Birk and Sons Jewellers. After raising her children, Mom returned to work as bookkeeper at the law office of Millman, Heath, Randolph, Minifie and Weed. She enjoyed many years as a Beta Sigma Phi sorority sister and was very active in the Canadian Cancer Society “Daffodil Drive” as well as the Red Cross “Meals on Wheels” program. She especially loved the weekly bridge games with her girlfriends Carolyn, Ruth, Eileen, Shirley, and Helen. Mom could always be found cheering in the stands at all of her grandchildren’s sporting events, music recitals, and other activities, often driving them to their practices and lessons. Our family would like to express much love and deep gratitude to Carolyn Arnold for being the best friend imaginable to Mom for sixty years. With Mom’s health failing during the last eight years, an amazing team of private caregivers allowed her to stay in her own home with Ned. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Betty Ann, Mercy, Geoff, Alanna, Wendy, Pat, Tina, and Jerrie; we always knew that our mother received wonderful care from all of you. We could not have managed the last year and a half without Mom’s VON nurse Sheila Thompson; we sincerely appreciate your professional expertise and compassion. Thank you also to our CCAC case manager Rosemary Croskery, our Palliative nurse Jennifer Phillips, Dr. Glen Maddison and Dr. Allison Crombeen of St. Joseph’s Hospice, and all of Mom’s Bayshore and Red Cross personal support workers. Mom was a very loving, kind, fun-filled and gracious woman. She appreciated the beauty in flowers, birds, music, dance, books, a good bridge hand, an exciting hockey game, Sarnia’s waterfront, chocolate, and a BIG cup of coffee. In keeping with her generous spirit, a random act of kindness in her honour would be fitting. Give a hug to a child and a treat to a dog. Tell your family and friends how much you love them. Family and friends will be received on Friday, November 14, 2014, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1576 London Line, Sarnia. The family invites you to wear a shade of purple (Mom’s favourite colour) in celebration of her full, well-lived life. A private service will be held at a later date. As an expression of sympathy please consider donations to the Alzheimer Society of Sarnia-Lambton, VON Sarnia-Lambton Branch, or St. Joseph’s Hospice Sarnia (cheques only at the funeral home please).
