James (Jamie) Trevor Engen passed away on a mountain top, hiking with his wife, Jeri Sue, amongst the gorillas of Rwanda on Febuary 8th, 2018, at age 55.
Born in New Westminster, BC and raised in Maple Ridge, BC, he led a life filled with love, adventure and travel.
He met his wife of 29 years while visiting Atlanta, Georgia. They were married and settled in Vancouver while he was finishing his Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of British Columbia.
To pay his way through school he worked as a foreman at the newly built BC Place, installing the complex on-site sound system. He then worked as the sound engineer for BC Place for many years.
Jamie became a member of the Canadian Institute of CPA’s and was a Senior Vice President with Price Waterhouse.
Later he held senior management positions with public and privately owned companies in Canada and internationally. These included President and CEO of a high tech electronics manufacturing company; COO and Managing Director of a speaker manufacturing company with three divisions; CFO, Executive Producer and owner of a television production company and CFO of a high tech startup company.
He finished his career as a Managing Director at FTI Consulting as part of the Corporate Finance and Restructuring team. He consulted on a diverse portfolio of multi-million dollar international companies in a wide range of industries, including: Chinese forestry, oil and gas, construction, retail, food processing and hospitality.
He was proud of his work and the opportunity it gave him to travel the world and meet a variety of people he called his friends, but his greatest joy was his family. He treasured and would regale friends endlessly about his wife’s and children’s exploits. His passion for life was boundless. He loved good food, good laughs, good wine, and scotch.
He leaves behind his wife Jeri Sue, adored children Emma Jane, Trevor, and Rebecca, parents Jim Engen and Claudia Beaven, sister Leanne Engen and brother in law Kelly Whalley, step mother Diane Engen, half sisters Lauren and Annise Toliekis, grandmothers, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, may you toast Jamie with a drink of fine scotch. A Celebration of Life event will be held on April 12th at 1:30pm at the Terminal City Club.
