Peacefully, with her family by her side, at Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg on Saturday, August 18th, 2012. A fighting and courageous heart was stilled.
Catherine Dudley (nee Kramer) at 65 years of age. Beloved wife of Gordon Dudley. Cherished mother of Kimberly MacIntyre (Frank), Neil Dudley and the late Monica Lee Morin. Dear grandmother of Tony, Coral and Gage. Sister of Murray Kramer (Judi) and Allan Kramer (Marg).
Cathy had many friends who loved her and will never forget the manner in which she accepted the challenge of suffering through fifteen years of metastatic breast cancer, with its inherent vicious attacks and the ensuing required treatments. She only asked that they walk beside her and be her friend. Cathy was the epitome of the adage “there is life after cancer”.
Among her many personal passions was her work with the British Red Cross in the Turks and Caicos Islands, involvement with the needy children’s breakfast program in elementary school, fund raising and public promotions for the T&C cancer Society, and was very involved with a Christmas food basket drive for the elderly. She was honoured by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International by being named a Paul Harris Fellow in appreciation of her tangible and significant assistance for furthering a better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world.
In Cobourg, and long before living in the Turks and Caicos, she was part of the original Breast Cancer Survivor Thrivers Dragon Boat team and engrossed herself with all aspects of the team even after she could paddle no more due to illness. The team, or family, was a wonderful support group, with women from 30 to 80 years old paddling in competitions across Canada, bringing recognition to Cobourg as unofficial Ambassadors, but never forgetting to support their teammates in times of spiritual needs comfort and encouragement with a hug. The team was a big part of Cathy’s life and it helped in a large way to give her the courage and strength to keep fighting against this insidious disease.
Cremation with a Celebration of Cathy’s Life to be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. E. in Cobourg on Sunday, August 26th, at 2 pm. Visitation to be held at the funeral home on Sunday, for one hour prior to the service from 1 until 2 pm. Those wishing may make a memorial contribution by cheque to the Breast Cancer Society, the Chemotherapy Unit @ NHH or to the Survivor Thrivers would be appreciated. Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com.
