Passed away at Lambton Meadowview Villa, Petrolia on Friday, August 17, 2012.  GERTRUDE A. “TRUDY” DOWNIE (nee Zandbergen), 88 years, she was formerly of Oil Springs.  She was a loving wife to the late Ross (1984).  She will be missed by her children Robert and Sue Downie of London, Karen and Wayne Lassaline of Oil Springs, and John and Leonia Downie of Sarnia, her grandchildren Angela and Robert Clouse and their sons Tristan and Jonathan, Monica Lassaline and fiancé Dave Thatcher-Maniuk, Erica Downie, and Jessica Downie and fiancé Piotr Sepsiak, and Rachel Downie.  She will also be missed by her sisters Rita Kennedy and Joanne Cross.  She was predeceased  by her parents Martinus and Hendrika (nee DeBruin) Zandbergen, her brothers Johannus, John, Martin, and Andrew, and her sisters Cora Kilbride, Jean Lucan, Margie VanBuuren, Willy Heurkens, and Theresa Terry.  Born in Holland Trudy immigrated to Canada when she was twenty four.  She worked as nurse in Toronto and later in Petrolia, she later worked a librarian at the Oil Springs Library.  Trudy was active in her community, serving two terms on the council of Enniskillen Township and was an honorary member of the Royal Canadian Legion Br. 216.  She was a recipient of the Outstanding senior of the year award in 2001.  Trudy was an artist in oil, having her work showed during the 1999 V.P.P. season. She was also an excellent public speaker with regards to poetry and short story’s.   Visitors will be received on Monday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Needham-Jay Funeral Home, Petrolia.  A funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, august 21, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Philip’s Parish, King St., Petrolia.  Father Antionio DelCiancio celebrating. Interment will follow at Hillsdale Cemetery.  As expression’s of sympathy, memorial donations may be made by cheque to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario or Alzheimer Society Sarnia-Lambton.  Memories, pictures, and condolence may be shared on-line at
