Van den Steene, Cunagonda “Connie”

Posted by on January 18, 2017

The great halls of Valhalla have gained a warrior that lost a valiant battle with cancer on Jan 16, 2017 at the age of 77.  True to Connie’s word and the van den Steene trait of stubbornness, she fought tooth and nail, but in the end, it was family and friends that surrounded her with love and support as she made her transition to the great beyond.  She was not afraid, as her parents Augustus and Hestra van den Steene and sister Grada “Gerry” Sparks were waiting to envelop her in their loving arms. There is no doubt in our minds she is at peace.  Connie was born in Holland and immigrated to Canada as a young girl with her family after WWII.  That journey across the big pond was just a starting point for a life she lived to the max.  She was the successful proprietor of REFLECTIONS HAIR SALON until her retirement. She was not one to let the grass grow under her feet and enjoyed travelling the world. Connie was an exceptional artist, working with oil painting and sculpture. For those that knew her, she was perhaps one of the luckiest BINGO players around.  We will miss her wit, strong opinions, advice (good and bad), her crocheted handcrafts, her generosity and frugality and most of all her frequent laughter.

She will be missed by her brother Johannes “Joe” van den Steene (Marie Anne) and sister Margaretha “Margie” (Dennis Costa) of MI and brother-in-law Tom Sparks (Pat) of Arkansas.  Proud aunt of Robbie, Brian, Kirsten, Kathy (Mike), Jennifer (Eric), David (Susie), John (Julie), Michael (Sandra), Matthew (Christina), Kimmie (Dan), Josh (Kelly).  Great aunt of Sierra, Trey, Chelsea, Jacob, Jake, Ethan, Naomi, Parker, Sophia, Lucas, Alex, Avery, Chase, Logan and Gwen. She surrounded herself with cherished friends; Mona, Walter and so many more that we have not been privileged to meet.  Connie had a special bond with Bill Cathryn, whom she considered an adopted son.  She is loved and will be missed by us all.

Cremation has taken place.  Memorial visitation Saturday from 1 pm until Celebration of Life at 3 pm. at Families First 3260 Dougall Ave. South Windsor, 519-969-5841. Donations to Transition to Betterness are appreciated. Please visit www.FamiliesFirst.ca for a more accurate description of her exciting life and to share memories, photos or make a donation
