In his final few months, Len was especially grateful for the compassionate care he received from the front-line health care workers at WRH – Ouellette Campus, Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare, and from the CCAC and VON. SCHMIDT, Joyce Helen (nee Paterson)

Posted by on February 21, 2017

After 87 years of displaying a fierce zest for life, often sacrificing meals and sleep while in the throes of a fabulous new book, our Mom, Grannie and friend decided Feb. 17 it was time to move on. She departed with trademark smile (one she defiantly shows off on her passport photo). Born in Edinburgh to David and Anne Eliza (Black) Paterson, Joyce made the Calgary Herald front page on her arrival there in 1954, looking for adventure in the New World. Married her Hollyburn Mountain ski instructor (duck-hunting honeymoon in a pink Cadillac followed), raised four boys, sailed the Nile, visited the pyramids, cried through Verdi’s Aïda in Verona, marvelled at the Kremlin’s immensity and commuted daily to work atop a 10,000-foot Swiss mountain. Money, whenever there was any, was a means towards more travel and fashion, and the family couch was regularly occupied by vagabond world travelers, often just-encountered, foreign-tongued strangers she’d invite home to share their fantastical tales of adventure. Optimistic and generous, unflappable and undeterred, she looked at the world in a uniquely positive way, saw the best in people, sacrificed for others and made the world a better place. Predeceased by husband Reto (1990) and sons Cameron (1986) and Greg (2008), she is survived by sons Doug (Lori) and Neil (Maria) and their families, including wonderful grandchildren Ashley, Leanne, Madelaine and Max. Lover of jazz and classical music, independent women and strong men and those who pursue dreams (even the smallest ones). Friends (and strangers) are encouraged to commit the random acts of kindness that were part of Joyce’s daily living. At Joyce’s request there will be no visitation or funeral service. Arrangements entrusted to WINDSOR CHAPEL (Central Chapel) 1700 Tecumseh Rd. E. 519.253.7234. Following cremation, her ashes will be carried to mountaintops and highlands where her spirit will long soar. Special thanks to the wonderful staff and volunteers at Hospice of Windsor and Essex County, and a fond farewell to the fine folks at Chartwell Royal Marquis Retirement Residence. Online condolences and cherished memories may be shared with the family at www.windsorchapel.com.
