CANTLE: Robert William

Robert (Bob) William Cantle, age 96, passed away peacefully early Tuesday, morning, October 16, 2018 at Owen Hill Community Care in Barrie, Ontario. Born March 8, 1922, Toronto, he was the eldest of four of the late Edward James and Louise  (nee Schaefer) Cantle. Bob was the beloved husband of the late Dawn (Hogarth). They shared 66 wonderful years together in the house they built on Balcarra Ave., in Scarborough. Together they had five children Sharon Summers (Ken), Rosemary Merritt (William), Linda Cantle, Ted Cantle (Paige) and Joy Cantle-Jones (Robert Jones). He was very proud of their thirteen grandchildren Jennifer Nodwell (Jay), Barb Summers (Alan Sinclair), Christina Summers, Laura Summers (Dave Bourdon), Susan Holt (Jeret), Arianna Merritt, Elena Merritt, Olivia Merritt, Weston Trott (Saren), Courtney Trott, Evan Trott, Grace Cantle and Gloria Cantle. He was also extremely fond of his five great grandchildren, Thomas and Elijah Nodwell, Cayden Sinclair, Gabrielle Bourdon and Xavier Trott. Brother of Charles, Elizabeth (White) and the late Arthur.  Bob was self-made and self-reliant. He packed a lot into his life. He achieved many of his dreams. What he didn’t know he would learn. He had a never-ending inquiring mind. He was proud to be a professional Chemical Engineer and to start his own company. He was proud to be Canadian. Each summer he would pack up the car and camping gear and take the family across Canada as it was important to him for the family to know and appreciate their country. In addition to the family house, he built the family cottage on Balsam Lake with his pal ‘Buster’, never far from his side. He realized one of his many dreams at the age of seventy, when he paddled the Tatshenshini River, Yukon. Bob was a kind and gentle man who loved to chat and share interesting stories about yester-year. He relished the good things of life including art, (mostly his wife’s), music, books, travel, food, animals, nature, friends and family.  Bob was there for the extended family through thick and thin. Bob will be fondly remembered by many people of all ages and walks of life as Bob touched many hearts and minds over the years. Friends and family members are welcome to join his family at the Celebration of Bob’s Life to be held on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at Scarborough Bluffs United Church, 3739 Kingston Road, Scarborough. Visitation 1 pm; Celebration of Life Service 2 pm; Reception 3 pm. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Owen Hill Care Community for their loving care for Bob in his last eight months.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Owen Hill Care Community or the Canadian Cardiac Health or a charity of your choice in Bob’s memory.
